IU Athletics Sets New Fundraising Record

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Thanks to the support of thousands of loyal Hoosiers, the IU Varsity Club recently established yet another new fundraising record for annual giving. During the 2017-18 campaign that ended June 30, $12.8 million was raised to help pay the scholarship bill that IU Athletics pays the university to educate our students who participate in intercollegiate athletics.
"Varsity Club donors continue to make an enormous, lasting difference in the lives of our students who compete in intercollegiate athletics," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "This record-breaking fundraising year is made even more meaningful given that IU Athletics receives no student fees, no tuition contribution, and no taxpayer support. Our donors make it possible for us to educate our students at one of the nation's premiere academic institutions and to successfully compete at the highest levels in athletics, all without diverting any funds from the academic mission of the university."
The Varsity Club raised over $150,000 more than last year's previous record annual giving total. Loyal donors give throughout the year and particularly during the final push with June 2018 being the third largest month of giving in the Varsity Club's annual giving history with over $5.3 million in total contributions. Over 1,800 donors went above and beyond by giving 110% of their annual giving level, providing an additional $900,000 in scholarship funds. The Earn Your Stripes 110% program rewards those donors with a special gift, additional priority points, and eligibility to win ultimate baseball, football and basketball experiences.
"There isn't a more loyal, dedicated group of supporters in collegiate athletics than our Varsity Club donors," said Deputy Athletic Director Scott Dolson. "Every year, they demonstrate their commitment to creating opportunities for our students to follow their dreams academically and athletically. This year's record total is a reflection of that unwavering commitment. I know I speak for all of our students and IU Athletics staff when I say how extraordinarily grateful we are for their record-breaking support.
"There are many groups and individuals that have played an enormous role in our fundraising efforts, including the IU Foundation, the IU Varsity Club, the IU Athletics Ticket Office, and the entire Athletic Department staff. This success couldn't happen without their hard work. I also want to offer a special thanks to the Varsity Club Board of Directors and IU Athletics Capital Campaign Steering Committee for their leadership, advocacy and guidance."
