Bag Policy FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions – IU Athletics Clear Bag Policy (Adopted prior to 2017-18 Academic Year)
Why did IU Athletics adopt this policy?
After reviewing our stadium and security policies it was recommended that we implement a clear bag policy for the 2017 season and beyond. By adjusting our policy this will allow for enhanced public safety and make access more efficient. Our policy is similar to what the NFL and other college football venues have in place. Additionally, the Big Ten Conference implemented a clear bag policy for its annual championship game.
How many bags can each person bring into the venue?
Each patron is allowed one (1) clear bag, either one-gallon Ziploc or the 12” x 6” x 12” clear bag, plus a small clutch. All clear bags, or small clutch, will be searched upon entry.
Can I bring my photo camera, binoculars, iPhone/Android cell phone, tablet in addition to a clear plastic bag?
Yes. Binoculars or a phone or camera with a lens NO greater than six inches in length can be carried in so long as it is not in its own bag.
What if I get to the gate and my bag is not permitted?
Fans carrying bags that do not meet the criteria will not be allowed entry.
I have certain items that I need to bring into the venue for medical reasons and they don’t fit in a clear plastic bag. What should I do?
There will be two separate inspection gates to allow for screening of these bags and medically necessary items. The inspection gate on the east side of Memorial Stadium will be E2 and E4 and the west side of the stadium will be W2 and W3. All items will be subject to search.
Where do diaper bags fall within this policy?
Diaper bags are permitted as long as they pass proper inspection. During football games the two inspection gates are on the east and west side of Memorial Stadium. E2 and E4 are the inspection gates on the eastside and W2 and W3 are the inspection gates on the west side. During basketball games inspection occurs at the far left and right doors of the south and north lobby entrances. All items are subject to search.
Are all purses prohibited from entering the venue?
No. Small clutch purses, with or without a handle or strap, are permitted along with an approved clear bag. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched.
Will this policy affect the ability of fans to tailgate?
No. Fans will still be able to enjoy football tailgating activates in the parking lots and can now do so with greater safety and knowledge that entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.
What IU Athletics venues are affected by this policy?
This policy will apply to games held at Memorial Stadium (football) and Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall (men’s basketball).
How does this policy improve public safety?
By using a clear bag, it allows bags to be searched quickly and with reduced risk of a faulty search. The Department of Homeland Security’s “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign also supports this policy.
How is this policy more convenient for fans?
This will allow fans to move through security check points in a more efficient manner. Venue security and employees will be able to search bags quicker than they have in the past, which will mean that lines to enter will be shorter and move quicker to allow fans the best opportunity to be in their seat prior to kickoff.
Will IU Athletics provide a conforming clear plastic bag for free at every event?
IU Athletics will provide a confirming clear plastic bag for the first home football game (Aug. 31) of the 2017 season. After that game, fans will need to bring one of their own or purchase one from the various IU Varsity Shop locations around the stadium or in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Am I allowed to bring my own seat cushion into the venue?
No. In an effort to make seat cushions uniform throughout the stadium and provide maximum comfort for all fans, only seat cushions purchased ($10 per game) inside Memorial Stadium will be permitted.
Can I bring my own blanket for games with cooler temperatures?
Yes. Fans may bring blankets into Memorial Stadium after they have been searched prior to entry.
Will this policy affect the ability of fans to tailgate?
No. Fans will still be able to enjoy tailgating activates in the parking lots and can now do so with greater safety and knowledge that entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.
