In 2016, the Hoosiers saw the highest overall win total (29) and Big Ten victory total (10) since 2012 while also shutting out Wisconsin to earn their first win in the Big Ten Tournament since 2006. Additionally, two players earned Second Team All-Big Ten accolades in sophomore Rebecca Blitz and redshirt senior Shannon Cawley. IU ended the season ranking fourth all-time in program history with 210 RBI and third with 174 walks.
Indiana found its place near the top of numerous offensive program records in 2015, including setting a new home run mark with 51 long balls, cruising past the previous high of 40 set in 2006. The Indiana bats finished second in Hoosier history in runs scored (282), RBI (252) and walks (193). Freshman Rebecca Blitz, who plated 41 runs on 59 hits in 2015, became the first freshman to pick up NFCA All-Region honors since 1995 as she was named to the Second Team. In addition, the Hoosiers combined for a .288 batting average, which sits at fourth-all time for a single season in Indiana history, and was up from .250 in 2014.
Perniciaro, who brought nearly 20 years of coaching experience to the Hoosiers, most recently served as the associate head coach at the University of Mississippi. In his three seasons with Ole Miss, Perniciaro coached 32 letterwinners and led the Rebels to school records in hits (396), walks (150) and stolen bases (79).
Prior to his tenure at Ole Miss, Perniciaro spent six seasons as the head coach for the Wichita State softball team, where he led the program to 168 wins. While leading the Shockers, Perniciaro coached Britnee Barnett to the most career hits in Wichita State's history (249).
He also served as the head coach for Northwestern State University during the 2005 campaign, which saw the Lady Demons amass a 35-28 record while averaging 4.7 runs per game.
As an assistant at Auburn University, he guided the Tigers to two NCAA Regional Tournament Appearances in 2002 and 2004. The Tigers also ranked as high as #12 in the nation in 2004. Following a successful 2004 campaign, the Tigers' staff earned South Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Before his time with Auburn, Perniciaro spent two years with the University of Georgia and was instrumental in the start-up of the program. He coached the Bulldogs to their first-ever winning season in 1998.
Perniciaro and his wife, Shannon, have two children: Nicholas (6) and Alexander (5).
