• Mark Deal is an assistant athletic director for alumni relations at Indiana and is the immediate past President of the I Association.
• A 2013 inductee into the state of Indiana Football Hall of Fame. Deal’s brother, Mike, joined him in the class. Their father, Russ, was inducted in 1976.
• Came over to the football program after serving as an assistant director of development with IU’s Varsity Club. Deal also played from 1975-78 and coached in 1979 and from 1996-99 for the Hoosiers.
• Played center and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1979 under head coach Lee Corso. The 1979 squad finished with an 8-4 record, including a Holiday Bowl victory over Brigham Young University, 38-37.
• His Indiana connections go far beyond his playing days. Russ was captain of the Hoosiers 1945 Big Ten championship team and is a member of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.
• Mike played on the 1967 Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl team.
• Spent four seasons as an offensive line coach from 1996-99 and has worked within the department of athletics since 2000.
• Prior to his return to Indiana, Deal spent five seasons (1991-95) as the offensive line coach at Rutgers University.
• Held assistant coaching positions at Virginia Military Institute (1989-90), Kansas State University (1986-88), and Marshall University (1984-85).
• Linebackers coach at Wabash College in 1980. He spent four years at the Division III school, including the 1983 season, which he spent as the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
• Mark and his wife, Patricia, also an IU graduate, have one daughter, Carrie, one son, Casey, and five grandchildren.
• Carrie is married to former Hoosiers quarterback Blake Powers (2004-07). She played volleyball at Indiana (2005-06), earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2006, and graduated with a degree in special education in May 2009.
• Mike’s granddaughter, Riley Hecklinski, lettered in softball (2018) to make the Deal family the first in IU Athletics history to have four generations of letterwinners.
• Casey is a 2013 Indiana University graduate and earned his MBA in 2018 from the Kelley School of Business.
• In November 2019, Mark was given the IU Bicentennial Medal by President Michael A. McRobbie, awarded to organizations and individuals who, through their personal, professional, artistic or philanthropic efforts, have broadened the reach of Indiana University around the state, nation, and world.
