He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 613-214 (.741). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 715-264 (.730). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 331-134 (.712). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 15-3 vs. Penn State overall and 11-1 at Indiana.
KNIGHT ON THE WEB: Bob Knight has entered cyberspace with his own web site. The site debuted in December. CoachBobKnight.com is a comprehensive look at the coach both on and off the court and the 1997-98 Hoosiers. The site features gameday information, team stats and a text of Coach's postgame press conferences plus many other features. On-line real time stat updates from games are also available.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Penn State are meeting for the 13th time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 11-1 after winning both games last year - 70-55 in University Park and 81-57 in Bloomington. Indiana is 9-1 against Penn State since the school joined the Big Ten in 1993. Indiana is 6-0 all-time against the Nittany Lions in Assembly Hall and in games played in Bloomington.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers are playing their 91st season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.7% winning percentage (740-500). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 95, Minnesota 82) A.J. Guyton scored a conference season-high 23 points to lead six Hoosiers in double figures as Indiana defeated Minnesota 95-82. The Hoosiers led 45-28 at halftime and built a 27-point lead two times in the second half before Minnesota tried to mount a comeback but could get no closer than 11 points. Indiana shot 52.7% from the field and made a season-high 29 of 38 from the free throw line. The Hoosiers also had a conference season-high 25 assists. Michael Lewis had 16 points while Luke Recker added 13, William Gladness and Luke Jimenez 11 and Andrae Patterson 10.
INDIANA'S UNBEATEN STREAK CONTINUES: Indiana was the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. The last two unbeatens of this year Stanford and Utah lost last week meaning Indiana's streak is safe until next year and now stands at 22 years.
VICTORY TONIGHT INSURES WINNING SEASON: A victory this evening would guarantee Indiana of its 28th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team at Indiana has has a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of 26) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
MORE WINNING: Indiana enters tonight's game 6-3 in league. Last year the Hoosiers did not win their sixth league game until the 12th conference game of the season. They did not win their seventh until the 13th game of the league season. Indiana also enters this evening's game winners of 12 of its last 15 games.
LOTS OF FREE THROWS: The Hoosiers made a season-high 29 of 38 free throws vs. Minnesota. This includes Michael Lewis going 16-20 from the line. While those are impressive numbers they did not even reach the Indiana record books. The previous lowest individual marks that make the record book are 17 free throws and 21 attempts.
GUYTON CONTINUES 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton continues to build on his consecutive game 3-point field goal record as he made five vs. Minnesota. The sophomore has now made at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 22 games (21 games this season and the final game of 1997). Jay Edwards held the previous record at 20 which he accomplished in 1989.
PASSING FANCY: Many teams have one true guard who is charge of distributing the basketball. However, the Hoosiers have two in A.J. Guyton and Michael Lewis. Lewis leads the team with 89 assists while Guyton has 85. The two combined for 16 assists against Minnesota.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: Double-doubles have become common place for Indiana players. Andrae Patterson had his third of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds at Wisconsin. That was the sixth such performance by an Indiana player this year. Luke Recker had his first against Purdue with career-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Charlie Miller had his first with season-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Ohio State. That came after William Gladness had his first with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Michigan. There could have been at least five more such performances. Patterson has had 9 rebounds three times and 8 another while Gladness had 13 points and 9 rebounds against Temple.
CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is sixth on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 259 (Jay Edwards is fifth with 291). Guyton also needs 4 3-pointers to move into seventh on 3-point field goal all-time list and surpass Steve Alford who had 107. Andrae Patterson now has 1,182 career points which is 26th on the all-time scoring list (Quinn Buckner is 25th at 1,195 points).
JUST WONDERING: The last time IU lost to Iowa at home (before the Dec. 31 loss) was Feb. 21, 1991. IU then went on a 50-game home winning streak which lasted from Feb. 24, 1991 to Jan. 24, 1995. The Hoosiers are now 2/25th of the way to accomplishing this again after the last four home victories.
BALANCED ATTACK: The Hoosiers have been a balanced team at least when it comes to scoring in conference play. A.J. Guyton (16.7), Luke Recker (14.9), Andrae Patterson (11.6) and William Gladness (11.0) are all scoring in double figures. Michael Lewis (8.9) is just a basket away from joining this group.
THE BIG FIVE: A.J. Guyton, Luke Recker, Andrae Patterson, Rob Turner and William Gladness are the top scorers for the Hoosiers. In fact the quintet has accounted for 73.3% (1,180-1,609) of Indiana's scoring this season.
COMEBACK KIDS: The victory over Wisconsin marked the fifth time this season the Hoosiers have overcome a halftime deficit and won the game. Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 5-4. This record also includes wins over UAB, South Alabama, USF and Western Michigan. Indiana also overcame a 22-point second half deficit at Illinois to tie the game.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers broke a two-game sub-50% shooting slump as they shot 52.7% (29-55) vs. Minnesota. This effort means Indiana has shot better than 50% in six of the last eight games. The Hoosiers have been a good second half shooting team, bettering 50% in 15 of the last 18 second halves. The Hoosiers' overall shooting percentage stands at 49.3% coming into this evening's game and one of the league leaders at 50.3% in conference games. That overall mark is still above last season's 43.8% team mark. Three Hoosiers P William Gladness (55.9%), Rob Turner (52.8%) and Luke Recker (52.7%) P are shooting at least 50% from the field. The Hoosiers have shot 51.4% (432-841) in their victories but just 44.1% (147-333) in the losses. Last season the Hoosiers shot better than 50% only three times but have done so 10 times this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: The Hoosiers posted season-highs of 29 of 38 from the foul line against Minnesota. Indiana has shot 79.8% (83-104) in the last four games. This stretch includes a conference season-high 91.3% (21-23) performance vs. Purdue. That percentage was the second time this year IU has passed the 90% mark (Indiana's season-high is 94.1% P 16-17 P against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history). Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into this evening's game at 72.7% overall and one of the league leaders at 74.1% in conference play. Michael Lewis is the top player at 67-79 (84.8%). In the victories IU has made 268 free throws while the opponents have attempted 262. In the losses the opponents have 114 attempts while IU has made just 71. The Hoosiers are shooting 73.8% from the line in the victories but just 68.9% in the losses.
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers have shot at least 40% in four of the last five games, going 30-71 (42.3%) during this stretch. IU was 8-19 vs. Minnesota. Indiana is shooting 36.6% on the season. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 42.1%. Guyton's 48 treys are a team-high and he, Rob Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 87 of the Hoosiers 112 3-pointers. IU is among the league leaders in assists and assists to turnovers ratio. IU has accomplished 20+ assists nine times this year (four times in league play). The season-high is 26 vs. NLU. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success. In the victories they have 292(19.5) assists but just 86 (14.3) in the losses.
TURNOVER TALE: Turnovers have been mounting in recent games for Indiana. IU has had 19 or more in three of the last four games after posting a season-low 7 at Northwestern.
