SOCCER HOOSIERS SNEAK BY EVANSVILLE, 2-1 IN OVERTIME
Bloomington, Ind.- With seven minutes remaining in the first overtime, sophomore Dema Kovalenko scored on a free kick to beat Evansville, 2-1 and keep the Hoosiers undefeated and untied.
Indiana (13-0), playing in its second overtime match of the season, was awarded a free kick after Lazo Alavanja was taken down inside the box. Kovalenko converted the kick for his 15th goal of the season and his fourth game-winning goal.
IU fell behind to the Purple Aces at the 33:12 mark on a goal by Scott Bragg, but were able to tie the match just before halftime. Freshman Matt Fundenberger scored on a header from a few feet out at the 38:34 mark. Kovalenko and J.T. Cerroni were credited with assists on the goal.
In the second half, the Hoosiers allowed just one shot on goal and five on the game. But Evansville held IU scoreless as well, sending the game to sudden death overtime.
With ten minutes remaining, the Hoosiers seemingly won on a goal by Fundenberger, but the goal was nullified on a hand ball called on the freshman. Just three minutes later, Kovalenko knocked in the game-winner.
"We deserved this victory," Head Coach Jerry Yeagley said. "Great teams find ways to win in these situations, and it's nice that we have people who can come in and get the job done."
The Hoosiers played without senior co-captain Caleb Porter, who aggravated a knee injury, and had to replace Yuri Lavrinenko as well during the match. IU will next see action on Friday when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers at 7:30.
