Hoosiers Defeat Northwestern 4-0
Evanston, Ill. -- Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley wanted his top-ranked Hoosiers to score early against Northwestern and they did just that as they defeated the Wildcats 4-0.
Aleksey Korol got the Hoosiers on the board in the 12th minute as he received a long pass from Dema Kovalenko, spun, and put the ball in the lower right corner of the goal.
"We have to come out and play our game," Korol said. "And we did just that over the weekend."
With the 1-0 lead, the Wildcats defense was opened up and the Hoosiers took advantage of that scoring three more times in the first half.
Chris Klein scored in the 20th minute as he tallied on a corner kick. Two minutes later Nick Garcia scored on a three-yard shot after the ball was deflected off a Northwestern wall after a Lazo Alavanja free kick.
Alavanja scored the final goal of the game on a direct kick in the 27th minute from 20 yards out.
"We wanted to get up early and get some people some rest today," Yeagley said. "Our re-starts were a lot better today and that was the difference. We also didn't get oursleves in a hole today like we have in the last three games."
The Hoosiers outshot the Wildcats 17-5 while IU goalkeepers T.J. Hannig and Joe Zarr were forced to make only three saves.
The victory puts the Hoosiers one win away from tying the best start in the porgram's history. At 15-0-0 now, IU needs only one more to match the 16-0-0 start set by the 1978 team. The Hoosiers will have a chance to do just that next Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium against Ohio State.
