Friday (Nov. 14), CoreStates Spectrum (16,000), Philadelphia, Pa. Game
time is 7 p.m. EST.
GAME DATA:
The Indiana Hoosiers begin their 98th season of basketball
this evening as they take on Temple in the same building where Indiana won
National Championships in 1976 and 1981. This is Indiana's first
appearance in the Spectrum since those titles.
TELEVISION:
The Temple game is being broadcast by ESPN2 and back to
Indiana on the ESPN-Plus regional network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in
Indianapolis. John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action on the
ESPN-Plus network.
RADIO:
Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship
station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don
Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The
pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT
is college basketball's winningest active
head coach with 700 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is
just one of 10 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more
victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a
record of 598-208 (.742). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate
head coach and has an overall record of 700-258 (.731). Knight's record
in Big Ten play is 325-131 (.713). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA
titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten
Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991
and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in
May of 1991. Knight is 3-0 vs. Temple overall and 1-0 at Indiana.
THE SERIES:
Indiana and Temple are meeting for just the fourth time.
Indiana leads the series 2-1 after winning the last game played between
the schools 67-58 in a 1994 second round NCAA Tournament matchup at
Landover, Md. Prior to that contest the teams played in 1933 and 1934
with IU winning in T33 43-29 and the Owls winning in T34 50-30. Both of
those games took place in Philadelphia.
HOOSIERS AGAINST THE ATLANTIC-10:
Indiana is 19-3 all-time against teams
in the Atlantic-10. Most of those games have been against Xavier (a
series IU leads 7-0). The Temple game in 1994 was the last time IU played
an Atlantic-10 team.
SEASON OPENERS:
The Hoosiers are 20-6 in season openers under Bob Knight.
Last season IU defeated Connecticut (68-61) to give IU a two-game season
opener winning streak.
LAST MEETING:
(Indiana 67, Temple 58 P March 20, 1994 P NCAA Tournament)
Indiana broke a 36-36 second half tie by going on a 7-2 run with 11
minutes to play and held on for the 67-58 victory in the second round of
the NCAA Tournament. The Owls cut the lead to 3 at 53-50 with 5 minutes
to play but a 3-pointer by Todd Leary increased the lead and the Hoosiers
never led by less than 4 the rest of the way. Brian Evans led Indiana
with 18 points while Leary added 15. Alan Henderson had a double-double
with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
EARLY OPENER:
Tonight's game date (Nov. 14) is the earliest season opener
in school history. November 15 was the previous earliest date. That
happened last year and in 1991.
HOOSIERS RETURN TO SITE OF TWO NATIONAL TITLES:
Friday's game marks the
first time the Hoosiers have played in the Spectrum since winning National
Championships there in 1976 and 1981. The 1976 title was Coach Knight's
first of three at Indiana and capped a perfect 32-0 season (the 1976 team
is the last Division I team to go undefeated). That season the Hoosiers
defeated Michigan 86-68 to win the crown. The starters on that team were
Scott May, Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Bobby Wilkerson and Tom Abernethy
(all five played in the NBA).
The 1981 team was led by Isiah Thomas, Randy Wittman and Landon Turner. The Hoosiers defeated North Carolina for the title that season with a 63-50 victory. Thomas scored 23 points in the title game while Wittman added 16 and Turner 12.
NEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTE:
Indiana's three newcomers: transfers William
Gladness and Rob Turner plus freshman Luke Recker played well in
Indiana's two exhibition games. The trio combined to average 29.5 ppg,
9.5 rpg and 4.0 apg.
A LOOK AT THE 1997-98 HOOSIERS:
The Hoosiers were 22-11 a year ago and
finished in a tie for sixth in the Big Ten with a 9-9 mark. Indiana also
made its 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament where they
lost to Colorado in the first round in Winston-Salem.
The Hoosiers return four starters from last year in Andrae Patterson (13.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 39 blocks), A.J. Guyton (13.6 ppg, team-high 129 assists), Jason Collier (9.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Charlie Miller (8.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg). Guyton was the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year and a second team all-conference selection. Patterson was a third team all-conference selection while Collier earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Also returning are seniors Richard Mandeville and Robbie Eggers and sophomores Larry Richardson, Michael Lewis and Luke Jimenez.
There are five newcomers on the team in JC transfers William Gladness and Rob Turner plus freshmen Luke Recker, Kirk Haston and walk-on Tom Geyer. Haston and Geyer are going to be redshirted leaving the Hoosiers with a roster of 12 for the season.
FROM THE FIELD:
Last season Indiana shot just 43.8% from the floor.
However, when the Hoosiers shot well they won. Indiana was 16-3 in games
where they shot better than its opponents in 1996-97. In the two
exhibition games IU shot 44.9% (61-136).
CHARITY TOSSES:
Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in
the nation last season finishing second in the nation at 76.6%. However,
the Hoosiers had more attempts (880) and free throws (674) than any other
team in the top 20. Last year's effort marked the second consecutive year
the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in free throw percentage. Indiana shot
well from the line in the two exhibitions going 33-46 (71.7%) including a
15-17 (88.2%) night against AIA. One of Indiana's keys to victory over
the years has been making more free throws than the opponents attempt. In
the two exhibition games, IU made 33 while the opponents attempted just 28
(last year those numbers were 647-477). IU's 674 free throws last season
was the fifth-highest total in school history.
THREE-POINTERS:
Indiana was the second-leading 3-point shooting team in
the league last year at 37.4% overall and 39.6% in the league play. The
Hoosiers made just 8-25 (32%) from long range in the two exhibitions.
Last season the Hoosiers made 179 3-pointers which was the fourth-highest
season total in school history. IU's 479 3-point attempts in 1997 was a
school record.
THE BOARD REPORT:
The Hoosiers outrebounded opponents last year by a
35.9-35.2 margin. In the two exhibition games, IU grabbed 87 rebounds
(43.5 average) and held a 43.5-36.5 margin off the glass.
TURNOVER TALE:
Last season Indiana was 14-2 when committing the same or
less number of turnovers and 8-9 when committing more.
ASSISTS ANGLE:
The Hoosiers registered more assists than turnovers only
12 times last season (in three other games, the totals were the same).
IU had 42 assists in the two exhibition games led by Michael Lewis' 13.
BLOCK PARTY:
Andrae Patterson led the team with 39 (fourth best mark in
the league) last season. IU's 131 blocks in 1996-97 tied for the third
most in school history. The Hoosiers had 5 in the two exhibition games.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD:
Indiana was 17-1 (7-1 in league play) when leading
at halftime but was 4-9 (1-7 in conference play) when trailing at the
half. The only game the Hoosiers did not win when they led at the half
was against Minnesota.
DEFENSIVE DETAILS:
The Hoosier defense held opponents to 42.2% from the
field last year. In the two exhibition games, the opponents shot 44.3%.
The Hoosiers held opponents under 40% 13 times last year and did so in 5
league games.
SCORING SOME POINTS:
The Hoosiers were once again one of the top scoring
teams in the conference last year with an average of 72.6 ppg overall and
in league play. Points meant victories for the Hoosiers as they were 17-4
when scoring 70 or more points but were 5-7 when failing to reach 70
points. The Hoosiers averaged 81.5 ppg in the two exhibition games.
IT'S A FACT:
Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven
years with a average of 79.9 points per game.
MARGIN MATERIAL:
When the Hoosiers won they had the tendency to win big
in 1996-97. Indiana was 13-4 in games decided by 11 or more points.
Indiana was also good in close games going 7-5 in games decided by 5
points or less
TRIPLE-DOUBLE WATCH:
As strange as it might sound, no Indiana players has
ever recorded a triple-double.
HOOSIERS ARE THE BIG TEN'S BEST:
The Hoosiers have had 27 consecutive
winning seasons. Every Coach Knight team at IU has had a winning season.
During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the
Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same
lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of
26) non-losing conference seasons during Knight's tenure.
INDIANA - ONE OF THE NATION'S ELITE PROGRAMS:
Indiana is one of the top
schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU ranks
12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentage.
HOOSIERS AT HOME:
All-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an
impressive 319-42 (.884) including a 193-35 (.846) record in Big Ten
games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 86-9
(.887) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 61-22 (.735) against ranked teams in
Assembly Hall.
NEXT UP:
The Hoosiers play at Alabama-Birmingham next Thursday (Nov. 20)
at 8:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. CST). The game will be televised by ESPN2 and
broadcast on the IU radio network.
