RECAP
MINNESOTA 24 INDIANA 12
Fresh off of a win over Illinois, and a subsequent bye week in the schedule, Indiana traveled to Minnesota this past Saturday to take on the Gophers. Minnesota defeated the Hoosiers, 24-12, to give head coach Glen Mason his first Big Ten win. Indiana could manage just four K Andy Payne field goals despite gaining 443 yards of total offense.
Indiana got on the board on its very first possession as QB Jay Rodgers (40-22-254-2INT) found freshman WR Tyrone Browning (3-78-40LG receiving) on a 40-yd. pass play that moved the ball from the IU-27 to the UM-33. Four plays later, Payne connected on a career-long 48-yd. FG to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead with 12:55 remaining in the first quarter.
After Indiana and Minnesota traded possessions that failed to produce points, Minnesota QB Cory Sauter (25-16-267-2TD-1INT) put the Gophers in the lead when, on a 3rd-n-12 from the IU-23, he found RB Thomas Hamner on a screen pass that Hamner took 23-yds. down the sideline for a score that gave the Gophers a 7-3 lead.
The Hoosiers would answer right back. On the next drive, redshirt freshman RB Glynn Johnson (16-99-25LG rushing) would tally 22 of his 63 first-half rushing yards and Rodgers would find freshman WR O.J. Conner (4-61-36LG) on a 39-yd. pass play that moved the ball from the 50-yd. line to the UM-11. Indiana would penetrate as far as the UM-5 but had to settle for a 22-yd. FG to pull within 7-6 with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter. The one-point deficit would not last long, however, as Minnesota KOR Tyrone Carter returned a Payne kickoff 55 yds. to the IU-45. On the first play from scrimmage after the return, Sauter hit a streaking WR Tutu Atwell (7-167-1TD-58LG receiving) for a 45-yd. touchdown that gave the Gophers a 14-6 advantage late in the first qtr.
Minnesota's 14-6 lead would stand until midway through the second quarter when Indiana put together a 14-play, 83-yd. drive, that culminated in a 21-yd. FG by Payne. FB Chris Gall (9-55-13LG) was 4-34 receiving on the drive and sophomore TE Randy Maxwell (4-54-26LG receiving) had a 26-yd. reception on a 3rd-n-1 from the UM-35.
Indiana would score again in the first half when Payne kicked a 40-yd. FG with no time remaining on the clock to pull the Hoosiers to within 14-12 heading into the locker room. Minnesota would increase its lead to 17-12 with 1:55 remaining in the 3rd qtr. when K Adam Bailey nailed a 37-yd. FG. Early in the 4th qtr., Indiana's defense stopped Sauter on a quarterback sneak on a 4th-n-1 from the 50-yd. line. On Indiana's next series, Payne hit the upright on a 41-yd. FGA.
Minnesota would seal the victory when Sauter found Atwell again, this time on a 58-yd. pass play to the IU-3 with less than 2:00 remaining. Sauter would score two plays later.
