GAME DATA:
The Indiana Hoosiers play their third consecutive road game as
the 1997-98 season begins this evening at Hawaii. The Hoosiers are
looking to move over the .500 mark after splitting their first two games
at Temple and at UAB. If the Hoosiers were to win it would be head coach
Bob Knight's 600th victory at Indiana.
TELEVISION:
The Hawaii game is being broadcast by ESPN-Plus. John
Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action.
RADIO:
Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship
station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don
Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The
pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT
is college basketball's winningest active
head coach with 701 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is
just one of 10 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more
victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a
record of 599-209 (.741). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate
head coach and has an overall record of 701-259 (.730). Knight's record
in Big Ten play is 325-131 (.713). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA
titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten
Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991
and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in
May of 1991. Knight is 1-0 vs. Hawaii overall and at Indiana.
THE SERIES:
Indiana and Hawaii are meeting for just the second time.
Indiana won the previous game 69-52 on Dec. 30, 1974 in Honolulu. That
season, the Hoosiers finished the year 31-1 and had a perfect regular
season.
QUARTER SYSTEM:
The two games in Hawaii will be played using the new
experimental quarter system being used in the preseason this year. The
games will be played in four, 10-minute quarters.
INDIANA IN THE ISLANDS:
Indiana's appearance in the United Airlines
Tipoff Classic is the school's first trip to Hawaii since 1994-95 when
the Hoosiers opened the season at the Maui Invitational. Overall this is
Indiana's fifth trip to the islands. In the previous four trips, the
Hoosiers went 7-5 which includes a 1-2 record at the 1994 Maui
Invitational, 2-1 at the 1990 Maui Invitational, 1-2 at the 1980 Rainbow
Classic and 3-0 at the 1974 Rainbow Classic.
ROAD WARRIORS:
Indiana's game with Hawaii is the third consecutive game
on an opponents home court to open 1997-98. This is
only the second time Indiana has opened with three consecutive RtrueS road
games (where the contest was played in the opponents home gym) in school
history. The only other time this has happened was 1918-19. Indiana has
played three games away from home before to start the season but in
tournaments as in the 1978 and 1995 Great Alaska Shootouts and the 1990
and 1994 Maui Invitationals.
HOOSIERS AGAINST THE WAC:
Indiana is 17-4 all-time against teams in the
Western Athletic Conference. UTEP is the team the Hoosiers have played
the most from the league and are 6-2 against the Miners. IU's last game
against a WAC squad was vs. UTEP in 1989-90 (a 69-66 IU win in El Paso).
