PATTERSON NEARS 1,000:
Senior Andrae Patterson needs just 17 points to
become the 33rd player in Indiana history to score 1,000 or more points.
He would be the first player to accomplish this since Brian Evans hit the
1,000-mark late in his junior year in 1994-95. The next player on the
all-time list is Harry "Butch" Joyner who had 1,030 points from 1966-1968.
SECOND HALF SURGE:
The Hoosiers used a strong second half to defeat UAB.
In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Hoosiers outscored the Blazers
51-33. They made 19 of 28 field goals for a 67.9% shooting clip and
committed only five turnovers. This half was quite a difference for IU as
in the first three halves of the season the Hoosiers shot only 34.6%
(27-78) and had committed 33 turnovers.
HOT-SHOOTING HALF:
Indiana's 19-28 (67.9%) second half from the field at
UAB marked the first time the Hoosiers have shot over 60% from the field
in a half since last year's second Michigan game. In that contest the
Hoosiers came back from a 20-point deficit to win in overtime while making
18-28 (64.3%) in the second half. Last season Indiana had four halves in
which they shot 60% or better from the floor.
NEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTING:
Indiana's three newcomers - JC transfers William
Gladness and Rob Turner plus freshman Luke Recker - have all contributed
in the early going. They combined for 27 points, 19 rebounds and 4
assists against Temple and then 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists vs.
UAB. Those numbers combine for averages of 25 points, 15.5 rebounds and
4.5 assists per game in the two games.
FROM THE FIELD:
Helped by a 19-28 (67.9%) second half vs. UAB, IU shot
49.1% (28-57) for the game to come into tonight's game at 43.4% for the
season. The Hoosiers outshot UAB (49.1%-34.3%) which marked the first
time that has happened this season.
CHARITY TOSSES:
Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in
the nation last season finishing second in the nation at 76.6%. However,
the Hoosiers had more attempts (880) and free throws (674) than any other
team in the top 20. Last year's effort marked the second consecutive year
the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in free throw percentage. Indiana is
off to a slower start in charity tosses this season as they have made only
30-45 (66.7%) in the first two games. One of Indiana's keys to victory
over the years has been making more free throws than the opponents attempt
but this season the Hoosiers have made 30 while opponents have attempted
43. IU's 674 free throws last year was the fifth-highest total in school
history.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE:
Indiana's defense has been solid , holding the two
opponents to just 35.8% from the field. IU held both Temple (37.7%) and
UAB (34.3%) below 40%. The Hoosiers held opponents under 40% 13 times
last season.
THREE-POINTERS:
Indiana was the second-leading 3-point shooting team in
the league last year at 37.4% overall and 39.6% in the league play. This
season the Hoosiers are off to a 11-31 (35.5%) start from long range.
After making 5-15 at Temple, the Hoosiers rebounded to 6-16 at UAB. In
that hot-shooting second half, the Hoosiers connected on 5-7 from long
range. Last season the Hoosiers made 179 3-pointers which was the
fourth-highest season total in school history. IU's 479 3-point attempts
in 1997 was a school record.
THE BOARD REPORT:
The Hoosiers outrebounded opponents last year by a
35.9-35.2 margin. This season they are off to a good start on the boards
as they hold a 43.5-35 margin. The Hoosiers had a season-high 44 rebounds
vs. UAB which also included a season best 16 offensive boards.
TURNOVER TALE:
Turnovers have been a problem for the Hoosiers but they
had just 15 at UAB after turning it over 23 times at Temple. Indiana
really took care of the ball in the second half against UAB turning it
over just 5 times. Last season Indiana was 14-2 when committing the same
or less number of turnovers and 8-9 when committing more.
ASSISTS ANGLE:
The Hoosiers registered more assists than turnovers only
12 times last season (in three other games, the totals were the same).
So far this season they have 23 assists and 38 turnovers. In the UAB
game, IU had 15 assists and 15 turnovers.
BLOCK PARTY:
After having just 1 block at Temple, the Hoosiers swatted 6
at UAB. Andrae Patterson and Jason Collier led the team with 2 each vs.
the Blazers. Patterson, who leads the team with 3, led the team with 39
(fourth best mark in the league) last season. IU's 131 blocks in 1996-97
tied for the third most in school history.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD:
Last season Indiana was 17-1 (7-1 in league play)
when leading at halftime but was 4-9 (1-7 in conference play) when
trailing at the half. This year the Hoosiers lost to Temple after leading
at the half but won at UAB after being down by 2 at the break. The only
game the Hoosiers did not win when they led at the half was against
Minnesota last year.
SCORING SOME POINTS:
The Hoosiers were once again one of the top scoring
teams in the conference last year with an average of 72.6 ppg overall and
in league play. Indiana was 17-4 when scoring 70 or more points but were
5-7 when failing to reach 70 points last year. After scoring just 53
points at Temple, the Hoosiers came back with 80 at UAB which was close to
the two-game exhibition game average of 81.5. The 53 points was the
lowest total since a loss at Purdue last season. Last season the Hoosiers
failed to score 60 or more points three times but were 1-2 in those games
(59-49 victory over Princeton).
IT'S A FACT:
Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven
years with a average of 79.9 points per game.
MARGIN MATERIAL:
When the Hoosiers won they had the tendency to win big
in 1996-97. Indiana was 13-4 in games decided by 11 or more points.
Indiana was also good in close games going 7-5 in games decided by 5
points or less. This season IU has lost a 6-point game and won a 16-point
contest.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE WATCH:
As strange as it might sound, no Indiana player has
ever recorded a triple-double.
HOOSIERS ARE THE BIG TEN'S BEST:
The Hoosiers have had 27 consecutive
winning seasons. Every Coach Knight team at IU has had a winning season.
During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the
Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same
lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of
26) non-losing conference seasons during Knight's tenure.
INDIANA - ONE OF THE NATION'S ELITE PROGRAMS:
Indiana is one of the top
schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU ranks
12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentage.
HOOSIERS AT HOME:
All-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an
impressive 319-42 (.884) including a 193-35 (.846) record in Big Ten
games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 86-9
(.887) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 61-22 (.735) against ranked teams in
Assembly Hall.
