GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their first game in nine days on Monday evening as they take on San Francisco in the first game of the inaugural Pete Newell Challenge. The second game features BYU against California.
TELEVISION: The San Francisco game is being broadcast by Fox Sports Net with Barry Tompkins and George Raveling.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT: is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 706 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 10 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 604-211 (.741). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 706-261 (.730). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 325-131 (.713). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 2-0 vs. San Francisco overall but this is his first meeting against the Dons as the head coach at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and San Francisco are meeting for the first time. The Hoosiers are 5-1 all-time against teams from the West Coast Conferernce which includes a 3-0 mark vs. Santa Clara, a 1-0 record vs. St. Mary's and San Diego and a 0-1 slate against Pepperdine.
TOUGH WAY TO START THE YEAR: Indiana's 6-3 record might have something to do with the schedule they have played so far. In the latest Jeff Sagarin rankings, Indiana's schedule was ranked as the 34th toughest in the nation. It was also the toughest in the Big Ten.
GOLDEN STATE, IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME: Indiana is playing its first game in California tonight in almost 18 years. The last time IU was in California was at the 1979-80 Cabrillo Classic in San Diego. The only other time the Hoosiers have played in the Bay Area was during 1940-41 when they won at California 42-39. This game is only the 13th in California for the Hoosiers. By contrast IU has played 14 games in Hawai'i over the years.
