Release Notes
COLLIER TRANSFERS: Sophomore Jason Collier informed the IU coaching staff Wednesday he was transferring from Indiana. The 7-0 sophomore did not indicated where he was planning on playing in the future.
HOOSIERS FEEL AT HOME IN NBA ARENAS: During the '90s the Hoosiers have felt right at home playing in buildings NBA teams call home such as the New Arena in Oakland, the home floor of the Golden State Warriors. IU has played 25 games in NBA arenas since the start of the 1989-90 season and are 22-3 in those games. This game begins a stretch of three consecutive games in NBA arenas for the Hoosiers as the host the annual Hoosier Classic at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis this weekend. Later in the season they will play the first ever Big Ten Tournament at the United Center in Chicago. The three losses all came in NCAA Tournament games.
IU-PURDUE, PLAYING THE SAME SCHEDULE?: This game is the third team Indiana has played after Big Ten rival Purdue has played them. The Hoosiers defeated Northeast Louisiana and lost to Kentucky after Purdue had the same results against both clubs. The Hoosiers hope this trend remains the same as the Boilermakers defeated the Dons Dec. 13 in Lafayette.
ROAD WARRIORS: Indiana has played all across the country this season with stops in Philadelphia, Birmingham, Honolulu, Indianapolis and now Oakland. The round trips to all five of of these cities from Bloomington comes close to 18,000 miles.
HOLIDAY CHEER: The Hoosiers have usually played well in December. IU's record in December since the 1990-91 season stands at 55-8 heading into this upcoming game. That mark includes a 4-1 record this season and 9-0 in 1990-91 which is the best record of the month during this span.
ONE HALF WONDERS: Several Hoosiers have put together some impressive scoring halves already this season. Rob Turner had the best half with a 19 point (finished with 25) first half vs. Kentucky. A.J. Guyton scored all 17 of his points against South Alabama in the second half. Turner also scored all 13 of his points in the second half vs. UAB. IU has had 18 individual double figure point outputs in a half this season.
ON THE REBOUND: Perhaps the most interesting statistic of the season is A.J. Guyton's presence on the boards. The 6-1 sophomore is the team's second leading rebounder at 5.3 per game and has 48 on the season (just one off the team lead). Last season he averaged a respectable 3.3 per game but if you were to take his current average and project a total for the entire season he would end up with 148 rebounds (had 110 last season). He has averaged 6.3 per game over the last four contests.
COMING OFF THE BENCH SEEMS TO WORK: Andrae Patterson has become the Hoosiers sixth man recently with good results. His averages in his five starts are 6.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. By contrast, those numbers are at 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a contest in the four games he did not start. Included in those totals are season-high games of 16 points against Notre Dame and Evansville.
BALANCED ATTACK EQUALS VICTORIES: The Hoosiers have had a balanced attack in this season's victories as four players are scoring in double figures in those games. However, in the three losses only A.J. Guyton and Rob Turner are in double figures and no other player is above 7.3 points per game.
FROM THE FIELD: After shooting better than 50% in four consecutive games (128-231, 55.4%) for the first time since 1993-94, the Hoosiers failed to reach the break even point in the last two games. In these last two games, IU is just 47-105 (44.8%). Indiana had good second halves in each of those games however shooting a combined 27-51 (52.9%) after first halves of 20-54 (37%). The Hoosiers shooting percentage has dropped back below 50% and stands at 49.5% coming into this game. That mark is still well above last season's 43.8% team mark. Four Hoosiers P Rob Turner (61.1%), William Gladness (52.6%), Luke Recker (52.5%) and Andrae Patterson (50%) P are shooting at least 50% from the field. The Hoosiers have shot 51.6% (175-339) in their victories but just 44.7% (68-152 ) in the losses. Last season the Hoosiers shot better than 50% only three times but have done so four times already this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana made just 14-23 (60.9%) against South Alabama after shooting better than 70% in each of the five previous games (93-116, 80.1%). Indiana's season-high of 94.1% (16-17) against Northeast Louisiana and that mark tied for the 10th best in school history. Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into this game at 72%. Andrae Patterson is the top player at 25-26 (96.2%). In the their victories IU has made 117 free throws while the opponents have attempted 97. In the losses the opponents have almost twice as many attempts (56) as IU does free throws (32).
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers have been in a slump from 3-point range as they have made just 15-48 (31.3%) over the last three games (Hoosiers had made 12-29, 41.3% in the two games prior to that). Indiana is shooting 36.2% on the season. Luke Recker is the top long range shooter at 9-21 (42.9%) while Rob Turner is also above 40% at 13-31 (41.9%). A.J. Guyton leads the team with 20 treys and he and Turner have combined to make 33 of the Hoosiers 50 3-pointers. IU is shooting 43.1% in the losses but 32.2% in the victories.
THE BOARD REPORT: Indiana has been outrebounded in three of the last four games and enters this contest with its smallest rebounding margin of the season, +2.8. After registering 40 or more rebounds in three of the first four games, the Hoosiers have averaged 32.6 rebounds per game in the last five games. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding in five of the nine games.
ASSISTS ANGLE: IU managed just 30 assists in its last two games after averaging 22 per game in the four previous games. Still the Hoosiers have averaged 19.7 in the last six games after an average of just 11.7 in the first three games. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success this season. In the victories they have 115(19.2) assists but just 38 (12.7) in the losses. Indiana's assists are now more than the turnovers for the first time this season (153-146).
TURNOVER TALE: While the Hoosiers assist totals were lower in the last two games, so were the turnovers as they had only 23 which included a season-low 10 vs. UW-Green Bay. This came on the heels of an average of 19.5 miscues in the two previous games. In the victories the Hoosiers have turned the ball over 85 times (14.2 tpg) while in the losses that number inflates to 61 (20.3 tpg). Indiana has registered five games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 36 blocks this season but 31 of those have come in the victories. The Hoosiers have 10 in the last two games after averaging just 3 a contest in the previous three games. Andrae Patterson (9) leads the team.
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana averaged 8.5 steals per game in the last two contests after totaling only 10 in the previous two games. IU's season-high of 14 against Northeast Louisiana ties for the eighth-highest mark in school history. IU has 56 (9.3 spg) steals in the victories but just 13 (4.3 spg) in the losses.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: Indiana's defense held South Alabama to just 36.7% from the field which marked the fourth time this season they have held an opponent under 40% (accomplished this 13 times last year in 33 games). The opponents are shooting just 42.4% coming into this game. In the victories, Indiana has held the opponents to 41.6% from the field and forced them into 105 turnovers. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 43.8% and have turned the ball over 39 times.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 4-1 while leading at halftime, 2-1 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 21-2 in the last 23 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.
MARGIN MATERIAL: Each of Indiana's wins this season have been by at least 8 points. The average margin of victory is 15.8 ppg while the loss margin stands at 8.7. Only three of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points P at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3) and vs. South Alabama (+8).
SCORING SOME POINTS: The Hoosiers enter this game averaging 76.1 points per game. Indiana averages 82.5 ppg in the wins but just 63.3 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers' 64 points against South Alabama was the lowest total in a victory this season. Indiana's season-high was 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawai'i. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have already matched this number through 9 games.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven years with a average of 79.9 points per game.... As strange as it might sound, no Indiana player has ever recorded a triple-double... The Hoosiers have had 27 consecutive winning seasons. Every Coach Knight team at IU has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of 26) non-losing conference seasons during Knight's tenure... Indiana is one of the top schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU ranks 12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentage... All-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an impressive 323-42 (.884) including a 193-35 (.846) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 90-9 (.909) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 61-22 (.735) against ranked teams in Assembly Hall.
NEXT UP: The Hoosiers host the annual Hoosier Classic at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 27 & 28). Indiana plays SW Missouri State the first night at 7 p.m. followed by UNC-Charlotte and Western Michigan at 9 p.m. Sunday's consolation game begins at 4:45 p.m. with the championship game starting at 7 p.m. Both of Indiana's games will be televised on the over-the-air ESPN-Plus network.
