INDIANA BASKETBALL GAME NOTES
Indiana vs. Iowa
GAME #13 FACTS: Iowa (11-1, 0-0) vs. Indiana (9-3, 0-0).
Wednesday (Dec. 31), Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind.
Game time is 4 p.m. (EST).
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers begin their 91st season of Big Ten basketball this afternoon as they take on Iowa. Indiana enters the game 9-3 after winning the Hoosier Classic last weekend to finish off the non-conference season. The Dec. 31 date marks the first time since the 1952-53 season that the conference season has started for Indiana before the new year.
TELEVISION: The Iowa game is being broadcast by ESPN-Plus with John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT: is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 709 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 607-211 (.742). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 709-261 (.731). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 325-131 (.713). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 32-17 vs. Iowa overall and at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Iowa are meeting for the 142nd time. The Hoosiers lead the series 84-57 after Iowa won last year's only game 75-67 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have won the last two and three of the last five. Indiana is 48-23 all-time against Iowa in games played in Bloomington and are 20-4 all-time vs. Iowa in Assembly Hall.
EARLY START TO LEAGUE PLAY: Today's game is not the earliest starting date in conference play for the Hoosiers. IU played Michigan on December 22, 1945 and during the 1952-53 season played Michigan December 20th and Iowa on December 22. Indiana won all three of those games.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!: Today's game is Indiana's fifth on New Year's Eve. It is the first time IU has played on the last day of the year since Dec. 31, 1965 when it played Bradley in Chicago (IU won 104-87). Indiana has also played on New Year's Eve in 1930 (won at Penn 24-20), 1938 (won at Michigan State 37-33) and in 1963 (lost at Loyola, Chicago 105-92). This is Indiana's first-ever New Year's Eve game at home.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers open their 91st season of Big Ten basketball this afternoon. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 19808 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.6% winning percentage (734-497). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
BIG TEN OPENERS: This is the second consecutive year the Hoosiers have opened the Big Ten conference season at home. The Hoosiers has won the last six games they have played to open the conference season at home dating back to 1989.
