SOCCER HOOSIERS ROUT SOUTH FLORIDA TO ADVANCE TO FINAL FOUR
Bloomington, Ind.- Aleksey Korol's two first half goals gave the Hoosiers more than enough as they defeated South Florida, 6-0 to advance to the Final Four. Korol scored at the 31:53 mark to give IU a 1-0 lead and scored again at the 40:50 mark before halftime.
The Hoosiers jumped all over the Bulls in the second half, scoring four more times, twice by Chris Klein and once each by Yuri Lavrinenko and Dennis Fadeski. Big Ten Player of the Year Lazo Alavanja had two assists including the game-winner.
Indiana held South Florida to just four shots in the first half and ten on the match. Bull forward Jeff Cunningham, South Florida's leading scorer was held shotless by the Hoosier defense. Indiana junior Gino DiGuardi, who was a last minute addition to the starting lineup due to an ankle injury, marked Cunningham.
"Gino's a tough, tough cookie," Head Coach Jerry Yeagley said. "We didn't know if he would play until 16 minutes before game-time."
The victory improves the Hoosiers' perfect record to 23-0 as they advance to the national semifinals against UCLA (20-2). The game will be played in Richmond, Virginia on Friday, with the winner advancing to the final match on Sunday.
"We're going to be the target, but we like to be in that position," Yeagley said. "(UCLA) is the pride of the West and their conference and with Virginia and (either SLU or SMU), we couldn't ask for a better Final Four."
