December 9, 1997 Press ReleaseINDIANA THIS WEEK-- Indiana hosts Valparaiso, Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., in Assembly Hall. For the Hoosiers, it will be their fourth game in six days and eighth game played in the last 13 days.
THE HOOSIERS-- Indiana is currently 5-4. Hoosier wins have come against Ball State, Kentucky, Green Bay-Wisconsin, La Salle and Evansville, while losses have been to Hawai'i, then-No. 14 Alabama, then-No. 15 Western Kentucky and Colorado State. Three Hoosier players are averaging double figures in scoring, led by senior Quacy Barnes' 18.9 points per game. Point guard Kristi Green is averaging 12.1 points, while forward Summar Maines averages 10.3 points per game. Maines leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.2 boards per game while teammate Dani Thrush leads in assists with 4.6 per game.
VALPARAISO-- The Crusaders bring a 4-2 record into Assembly Hall after posting two wins this past weekend at Western Illinois 85-70, and at Missouri-Kansas City 63-52. Forward Sarrah Stricklett leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game. Teammate Shantil Robinson also averages double-digits with 11 points per game. Valparaiso is coached by Keith Freeman who is in his fourth season with the program.
THE SERIES -- Indiana holds a 4-0 all-time series lead over the Crusaders. Last year, Indiana won 89-63 at Valparaiso. Summar Maines led the Hoosiers in that game with 17 points and eight rebounds.

HEAD COACH JIM IZARD -- Head Coach Jim Izard begins his 10th season at the helm of the Indiana program where he owns a 149-115 (.563) overall school record and a 67-90 (.427) mark in the Big Ten Conference. As Indiana's all-time winningest coach, Izard has guided his teams to eight winning seasons and two NCAA post-season tournament appearances. His 16-year career record stands at 312-164 (.657).
BARNES COLLECTS 1,000th -- Senior Quacy Barnes became just the 13th player in Hoosier history to score 1,000 career points Dec. 8, when the Hoosiers defeated Evansville 79-63. Barnes, who scored a game-high 18 points against the Aces, now has 1,015 career points to rank 12th all-time in scoring.
MUELLER SIDELINED -- Freshman Staci Mueller will be out of action a minimum of three weeks after being diagnosed with mononucleosis Dec. 9. Mueller, who has played in all nine games and started in four, was averaging 6.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
CHARTING MINUTES -- Junior Kristi Green continues to rack up playing time, averaging 38 minutes of court action per game. The 5-2 point guard has played all 40 minutes in four games, including 40 in the last two outings.
"Q" SCHOOL -- Quacy Barnes has gotten off to an impressive start this season. The 6-5 center has led the team in scoring in all but one game and is averaging 18.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent from the field. In addition, the school record holder for blocked shots has 19 this season giving her 228 for her career.
STARTERS VS. BENCH -- The Hoosiers starting five have accounted for 57.6 of Indiana's 72.9 points per game - 79 percent of its scoring total. Forty-three percent has come from senior Quacy Barnes and junior Kristi Green who average a combined 31 points per game.
RAINING THREES -- Indiana has connected for 51 3-pointers this season, averaging 5.7 per game. If Indiana's long range shooting continues, the Hoosiers should better last season's school record 148 treys.
DANI'S DISH -- Junior Dani Thrush leads the Hoosiers with 42 assists this season, averaging 4.6 per game.
LITTLE GREEN GIANT -- Kristi Green, has been one of the most consistent players for the Hoosiers, averaging 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. In addition, Green is shooting 45 percent from the field, 41 percent from the 3-point arc and is an impressive 24-25 (.960) from the charity stripe.
MUCH IMPROVED -- Junior Summar Maines has earned the "Most Improved" player award. Last season, the 6-0 forward averaged 3.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40 percent from the field. This season, Maines is leading the team off the glass, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 10.3 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the field.
QUICK RECOVERY -- After undergoing surgery to correct a tachacardia
problem (rapid beating heart) Thursday, Nov. 13, sophomore Rachael Honegger
returned to the court just three days later to play 13 minutes in IU's win
over Ball State. Since then, she has averaged 9.5 points and 3.8 rebounds
per game.
