RECAP:
Indiana vs. Ball State Indiana opened its 1997 home campaign with a 33-6 victory over Ball State before 38,006 fans at Memorial Stadium. QB Jay Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes for 408 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Hoosiers broke open a 7-6 halftime lead with 19 third-quarter points. Rodgers' 408 passing yards is the best single-game passing yardage total in school history, surpassing Bab Laufenberg who threw for 390 yards in a 24-20 loss vs. Iowa on October 9, 1982

in Muncie ... Before a Kenan Stadium record crowd of 57,800, Indiana lost its season opener to seventh-ranked North Carolina,
23-6 ... The Hoosiers are 67-25-5 all-time in home season openers and have won their last 11 in a row. DID YOU KNOW: ... that three true freshmen played against North Carolina? Wide receiver O.J. Conner started in place of the injured Jean Paul (abdominal strain), Joslin Goodman (5 tackles) started at outside linebacker, and running back Deion Grubbs played on special teams. ... that Indiana has not lost a home opener since 9/1 5/84 when the Hoosiers lost to Kentucky, 48-14 (It was Bill Mallory's first home game as Indiana's head coach).
INDIANA-BALL STATE CONNECTIONS: Cardinals with ties to Indiana University: Ball State head coach Bill Lynch was the quarterbacks coach under Bill Mallory at Indiana from 1993-94 ... Assistant head coach/defense tackles coach Ted Huber was an assistant coach at Indiana from 1980-83, and prior to that stint he served as the head coach at Bloomington South High School from 1976-79. While at IU, Huber coached current Hoosier head coach Cam Cameron ... Linebackers coach Curt Mallory worked as a graduate assistant coach at Indiana from 1993-94, while working for his father, Bill, who coached at Indiana from 1984-96. Bill Mallory is the winningest football coach in the history of Indiana University. Curt earned his Master's degree from Indiana in 1995.
