Hoosiers complete successful
day one at Indiana Invite Bloomington, IN--Despite injuries and illness, Indiana's women's tennis team fared extremely well after day one at the Indiana Fall Invitational. Playing in the six team tournament with Marquette, Miami (Oh.), Southern Illinois, Ball State, and Western Michigan, the Hoosiers won all but one match as they advanced five individuals and three doubles teams to tomorrows play.
The Indiana Fall Invitational, an annual event, consists of six singles flights and three doubles flights. In flight one, Indiana senior Megan McCarney advanced to the second round by defeating Molly Card of Southern Illinois 6-1,6-0. Freshman Ana Cerreto and senior Christy Sharp both advanced in flight two action. Ceretto defeated top seeded Esther Ruiz de Ora of Marquette 3-6,6-1,6-1 while Sharp knocked off Ball States Libby Gerding 6-0,6-3. Junior Kelly Fitzgerald advanced to tomorrows action in the 3rd flight by defeating Miami's (Oh.) Jennifer Overstreet 6-2,6-2 while freshman Jennifer Hsia looked impressive in defeating Natalia Adams of Miami 4-6,6-4,6-1 in fourth flight action. All three of Indiana's doubles teams also advanced to tomorrows play, which begins with the doubles matches at 9:00 a.m. The Hoosiers number one team of Jessica Anderson and Christy Sharp defeated Southern Illinois number one team of Molly Card and Sanem Berksoy in convincing fashion, 8-2. Ana Ceretto and Megan McCarney, the Hoosiers number 2 team defeated Ball States number one squad of Darcy Poulus and Gena Tranquada 8-1 in Flight 1 play. Indiana's third team of Kelly Fitzgerald and Jennifer Hsia defeated Southern Illinois 2nd team of Mardee Crand and Helen Johnson 9-7 in flight 2 play.
The Hoosiers will continue play tomorrow with doubles slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. Singles matches will follow the doubles, times to be determined. The tournament is scheduled to be played at Indiana Varsity Outdoor Courts but will be moved indoors to the Indiana University Tennis Center in the case of inclement weather. Fans are invited to attend the competition free of charge.
