HOOSIERS WIN TOURNEY
Indiana captured its fourth-straight tournament title this past weekend, winning its own Indiana Classic. The Hoosiers defeated Auburn 15-9, 15-13, 15-3, Illinois-Chicago 15-12, 15-13, 15-11 and Arkansas State 15-2, 15-4, 15-10. Junior Jen Magelssen picked up her second MVP honor of the season, hitting a .358 attack percentage with 39 kills in 81 total attacks. She also collected 21 digs and four service aces in the three matches. Teammates Ryann Connors, Cydryce Carter and Kristina Sanderson joined Magelssen on the all-tournament team.
BEST START -- With 13-consecutive wins, the Hoosiers are off to their best start in school history. The undefeated streak is also the program's longest. The previous record was nine-straight victories in 1977.
HOOSIERS AND THE BIG TEN -- The Hoosiers enter Big Ten play as one of only two league teams with unbeaten records. No. 1 Penn State is 11-0.
INDIANA RECEIVES VOTES -- Indiana is currently receiving six votes in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll. The Hoosiers appeared in the poll for the first time this season last week with two votes.
FLATLEY GETS 1,000 -- Outside hitter Julie Flatley became just the fifth IU player in the program's history to collect 1,000 career kills last weekend. Flatley, who has 143 kills this season, needs 381 more to surpass school record holder Liz Armbrustmacher (1985-88).
EQUAL DISTRIBUTION -- Spreading the wealth seems to be the key for the Hoosiers this season as IU boasts three players with 140-plus kills. Ryann Connors leads the Hoosier trio, averaging 4.48 kills per game. She is followed by Julie Flatley's 3.86 and Jen Magelssen's 3.74 kills per game. Connors ranks fourth in the Big Ten in kills per game while Flatley ranks eighth.
LEADING THE LEAGUE -- As a team, Indiana ranks first in the Big Ten for kills (17.31 kpg) and assists (15.78 apg). (See rankings at right)
ON THE NATIONAL FRONT -- As of Sept. 17, the Hoosiers ranked 20th in the nation for kills and 13th for assists. Individually, setter Kristina Sanderson ranked ninth for assists and Jen Magelssen ranked 20th for service aces.
ACCURACY COUNTS -- Junior middle blocker Melissa Rooney once again leads the Hoosiers in hitting efficiency. Currently, she carries a .356 attack percentage while averaging 2.41 kills per game. Rooney has already made her way into the IU record books, ranking second all-time with a .273 career attack percentage.
THE SETTER STANDS ALONE -- Taking on the responsibility as the team's lone setter this season, sophomore Kristina Sanderson has responded well, averaging a league-leading 14.09 assists per game. Sanderson currently ranks fourth all-time for career assists (1,437).
IU'S TERMINATOR -- Outside hitter Ryann Connors has quickly become the Hoosiers' terminator. With limited playing time due to a stress fracture in her tibia, Connors currently lead the Hoosiers in kills, averaging 4.48 kills per game. The 5-11 sophomore also sports an impressive .326 attack percentage.
GAL FRIDAY -- For the third-straight year, Jen Magelssen has proven that she is Indiana's all-around player. The junior outside hitter currently averages 3.74 kills, 2.98 digs and an incredible .65 service aces per game. Magelssen, the only IU player to ever record 300-plus kills and digs in back-to-back seasons, currently ranks seventh all-time for digs (828), ninth for kills (873) and third in service aces (141).
