INDIANA OPENS BIG TEN CONFERENCE SEASON
13-0 Hoosiers travel to Purdue, Ohio State
THIS WEEK -- Indiana's volleyball team takes its perfect 13-0 record on the road this weekend, traveling to Purdue and Ohio State for the start of 1997 Big Ten Conference season. The Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette, Friday, Sept. 26 for a 7:30 p.m., match against the Boilermakers, and then plays the No. 21 Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m.
HOOSIERS COACH -- Katie Weismiller is in her fifth season as Indiana's head coach with a 70-70 (.500) school record and a seven-year career mark of 120-94 (.561). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final Four appearances in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
PURDUE BOILERMAKERS -- Purdue enters Friday's match with a 7-4 record. Last weekend the Boilermakers lost to North Carolina in three-straight games before defeating Duke 3-2. Purdue is led by sophomore middle blocker Sarah Emke who is averaging 3.97 kills and 1.21 blocks per game. She also boasts a .317 attack percentage. Freshman outside hitter Katie Gibbons averages 3.68 kills and 1.58 digs per game. Sophomore setter Taryn Catlin is averaging 12.34 assists per game. Purdue is coached by Joey Vrazel who is in her third season with the Boilermakers and carries a 28-43 school and career record.
THE SERIES -- The all-time series between the two schools is a long and storied one, dating back to 1975. Through the first 10 years, Purdue dominated the series, winning 25 of 33 matches. Since then, the Hoosiers have reigned, posting a 14-9 mark over the Boilermakers in the last decade. Indiana has won four of the last five matches. Next month, Purdue travels to Bloomington for the annual "Monon Spike" match.
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES -- No. 21 Ohio State is off to a 9-3 start. Buckeye losses have come against Maryland, Oral Roberts and Nebraska. Outside hitters Vanessa Wouters and Andrea Pankova lead the Buckeye attack, averaging 5.11 and 4.51 kills apiece, respectively. Setter Jen Flynn is averaging 12.96 assists and a team-leading 2.71 digs per game. Coach Jim Stone is in his 16th year with the Buckeyes and carries a 349-147 school record.
THE SERIES --
Ohio State leads the all-time series 26-12. Last season the Buckeyes swept the Hoosiers, winning both matches in three-straight games.
