Indiana soccer team wins the
Nike/Snickers Soccerfest
Indianapolis, Ind. -- The top-ranked Indiana soccer team won the Nike/Snickers Soccerfest title with a 6-1 victory Rhode Island Sunday. The victory was the third tournament title for the Hoosiers in as many weekends.
Yuri Lavrinenko got the Hoosiers on the board with a penaly kick goal at 6:13 of the first half. I was then Dema Kovalenko time as he scored the next two goals at 17:17 and 19:45 to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead.
Indiana head coach Jerry yeagley went into the game wanting to play some of his reserves and after kovalenko's second goal, he began to do just that. And two of those subs, Matt Fundenberger and Tommy Keenan, played a big role in the Hoosiers next three goals.
Fundenberger, a freshman, scored the next three goals for the Hoosiers and Keenan assisted on each of them. His first one came on a shot from 12 yards out from pass from Nick Garcia and a slip head pass from Keenan for a 4-0 Indiana halftime lead.
All of those goals came against RIU's Anthony Latronica, who had been on the Indiana team four years ago before transferring to Rhode Island.
Yeagley played all of his reserves the entire second half as Fundenberger added two more scores. "I went into today's game wanting to play more players and I was able to do just that," he said.
The Hoosiers are now 7-0 on the season and play host to kentucky and Michigan State this week at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
In the other game of the tournament Sunday, Bowling Green defeated Butler 3-2.
Kovalenko, Fundenberger, Gino DiGuardi and Andy Parrish were named to the all-tournament team while Kovalenko was named the tournament's Offensive MVP. Garcia was the tournament's defensive MVP.
