Hoosiers finish strongly
in Fall Invitational
Bloomington, IN--Winners were determined today as the annual Indiana Fall Invitational came
to a close. The weather was perfect for tennis as all the final matches and several extra
sessions were played at Indiana's Outdoor Varsity Courts.
Indiana finished the weekend strongly, with two individuals capturing their flight championship and a doubles team finishing as the top team in their flight. Senior Christie Sharp made her last Fall Invitational a memorable one by capturing the 2nd flight championships by defeating Maimi's Janet Baker in straight sets, 6-0,6-2. On the flipside, freshman Jennifer Hsia won her first ever collegiate flight by defeating Jennifer Robison of Southern Illinois in straight sets 6-2,6-2. Hsia also won the doubles 2nd flight competition as she teamed with junior Kelly Fitzgerald to defeat Western Michigan's Kristen DuVall and Cyra Malik in convincing fashion, 8-2.
Although they didn't capture first place, several other Hoosiers finished the tournament with strong performances. Freshman Ana Cerreto, a product of Argentina, played strongly in her first collegiate contest and rebounded nicely from a second round defeat to capture 3rd place in the 2nd flight by defeating Miami's Elin Bengtsson, 6-1,1-6,6-3. Jessica Anderson, a sophomore, also recovered nicely from her first round loss to defeat Heidi Cakens of Western Michigan in straight sets, 7-6(7-1),6-0. Kelly Fitzgerald settled for fourth place in the 3rd flight after dropping a tightly contest match to Southern Illinois' Helen Johnson, 6-4,7-5. Megan McCarney, a default winner for 3rd place in the first flight, played an extra match and won, shutting out Jessie Klick of Marquette 6-0,6-0.
The number 2 doubles team of Ana Ceretto and Megan McCarney finished the day strongly as they defeated Marquette's Sara Fernandez and Esther Ruiz de Ora 8-3 for 3rd place in flight one while the number one Hoosier team of Jessica Anderson and Christy Sharp fell to Marquette's Elisa Penalvo and Ana Fernandez, 8-1 to settle for 2nd place.
Indiana is off for the next couple of weeks as they prepare for the Ohio State Invitational
on October 10-12. The team will be practicing daily throughout the week. Any questions about
the team or interview requests should be directed to David Shepley, Men's and Women's Tennis
