INDIANA BASKETBALL GAME NOTES
Indiana vs. Illinois
GAME #14 FACTS: Indiana (9-4, 0-1) at Illinois (8-5, 0-0).
Saturday (Jan. 3), Assembly Hall (16,321), Champaign, Ill.
Game time is 2:30 p.m.(EST)/1:30 p.m. (CST).
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their first road game of the conference season this afternoon at Illinois. IU dropped its first league game to Iowa Wednesday 89-76. That loss broke a six-game winning streak for the Hoosiers and puts their record at 9-4 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten. This is Indiana's second game in a span where it is playing three games in seven days to open the league season.
TELEVISION: The Illinois game is being broadcast throughout the midwest on the ESPN-Plus Regional network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT: is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 709 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 607-212 (.741). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 709-262 (.730). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 325-132 (.711). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 35-16 vs. Illinois overall and 33-16 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Illinois are meeting for the 137th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 73-63 after Illinois won last year's only meeting 78-74 in Bloomington. The Hoosiers have won 10 of the last 13 meetings including the last one in Champaign (85-71 on Jan. 13, 1996). Indiana has also won four of the last six games played at Illinois. The Illini hold a 39-29 series edge in all games played in Champaign.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers are playing their 91st season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.6% winning percentage (734-498). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
