SCHOOL RECORD FOR 3'S: Indiana's 25 3-point attempts vs. Iowa Wednesday is a school record. The old record was 24 set against Penn State in 1993.
CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is now seventh on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 217 (Greg Graham is sixth with 246). Guyton also needs 24 3-pointers to move into seventh on that all-time list and surpass Steve Alford who had 107. Andrae Patterson now has 1,095 career points which is tied for 29th on the all-time scoring list with Daryl Thomas. He needs 7 points to move pass three players into 26th place.
JUST WONDERING: The last time Indiana lost to Iowa at home was back on Feb. 21, 1991. The Hoosiers then went on a 50-game home winning streak which last from Feb. 24, 1991 to Jan. 24, 1995. Along those same lines, the last time Indiana lost its Big Ten season-opener at home was 1986. The Hoosiers then lost their next game at home to start 0-2 but came back to register a 13-5 league season and finished in second place.
THE BIG FOUR: A.J. Guyton, Luke Recker, Andrae Patterson and Rob Turner are the top scorers for the Hoosiers. In fact the quartet has accounted for 63.7% (621-974) of Indiana's scoring this season.
BACK ON THE ROAD: Today's game is Indiana's ninth of the season away from Bloomington. IU is 5-3 away from their own Assembly Hall this year.
PATTERSON ON THE RISE: Andrae Patterson's stats and play has been on the rise. After scoring 6 points vs. South Alabama, he has scored 10, 14, 16 and a season-high 17 in the last four games to increase his scoring average to 10.2 which is the first time this season it has been in double figures. During those same four games, he has grabbed 35 rebounds (8.8 pg), blocked 6 shots and registered 6 steals. His rebounding average of 6.5 is just 0.2 off his career season best of 6.7 set last year.
LEARNING FROM THE OLDER GUYS: Freshman Luke Recker must be taking a cue from senior Andrae Patterson as his stats have also been on the rise. The freshman has averaged 17.3 points per game over the last three games while dishing out 10 assists and making 10 steals. He has also played all but 18 minutes of the last three games. His 7-18 shooting performance vs. Iowa broke a streak of seven games of shooting at least 50% from the field.
COMEBACK KIDS: The victory over Western Michigan marked the fourth time this season the Hoosiers have overcome a halftime deficit and won the game. Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 4-2. This record also includes wins over UAB, South Alabama and USF.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have failed to reach the 50% mark in the last six games (155-347, 44.7% during this span) after shooting better than 50% in the four previous games (128-231, 55.4%) for the first time since 1993-94. IU's shooting percentage has been on the decline in each of the last four games (49% vs. USF, 46.8% vs. SMS, 42.6% vs. WMU and 41.2% vs. Iowa) which is the first time this has happened since the final four games of the 1995-96 season. The Hoosiers had been a good second half shooting team as they had shot 50% or better in the second half of nine consecutive games (56%) before going 15-35 (42.9%) vs. Iowa. The Hoosiers shooting percentage stands at 47.9% coming into today's game. That mark is still above last season's 43.8% team mark. Three Hoosiers P Rob Turner (52.6%), William Gladness (50%) and Luke Recker (51.8%) P are shooting at least 50% from the field. The Hoosiers have shot 49.7% (255-513) in their victories but just 43.6% (96-220 ) in the losses. Last season the Hoosiers shot better than 50% only three times but have done so four times already this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has seemed to have re-found its stroke at the foul line in the last two games going 30-37 (81.1%) after a three-game sub-70% stretch. Indiana's season-high is 94.1% (16-17) against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history. Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into today's game at 71.9%. Michael Lewis is the top player at 30-35 (85.7%). In the their victories IU has made 161 free throws while the opponents have attempted 143. In the losses the opponents have almost twice as many attempts (81) as IU does free throws (46).
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers have been struggling from behind the 3-point line recently as they have made just 11-49 (22.4%) in the last three games. This includes a 6-25 effort vs. Iowa. The 25 3-point attempts is a new school record. Indiana has failed to shot at least 40% in a game in six of the last seven contests. The Hoosiers did not even attempt a 3-point shot in the second half of the SW Missouri State game. Indiana is shooting 33.2% on the season. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 28-72 (38.9%). A.J. Guyton leads the team with 28 treys and he, Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 56 of the Hoosiers 65 3-pointers. IU is shooting 36.8% in the losses but 30.8% in the victories.
THE BOARD REPORT: Indiana had been doing a good job on the boards but Iowa outrebounded the Hoosiers by a 48-27 margin. That came on the heels of the Hoosiers averaging 41.5 boards per game in two previous contests. Iowa's 48 rebounds was an opponents season-high while the 27 IU boards was just two off a season-low. Indiana's rebounding margin is +1.4. The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in three of their losses and are at a -3.0 margin in the four losses. IU has registered 40+ rebounds five times. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding in seven games. ASSISTS ANGLE: IU has registered at least 17 assists in each of the last five games. They have also had at least as many assists as turnovers in each of the last seven games. The Hoosiers have registered 20 or more assists five times this season. The Hoosiers have averaged 19.6 in the last 10 games after an average of just 11.7 in the first three games. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success this season. In the victories they have 176 (19.5) assists but just 55 (13.8) in the losses. Indiana's assists to turnovers ratio (231-205) is at its highest mark of the season.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers have been taking care of the ball as they have averaged just 13.7 turnovers per game in the last six contests. This stretch includes a season-low 10 vs. UW-Green Bay. This average is below the season average of 15.8 per game. In the victories the Hoosiers have turned the ball over 127 times (14.1 tpg) while in the losses that number inflates to 78 (19.5 tpg). Indiana has registered eight games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 51 blocks this season but 43 of those have come in the victories. The Hoosiers have managed only 15 in the last four games after averaging 5 a contest in the previous two games. Andrae Patterson (15) leads the team.
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana has averaged 10 steals per game over the last six games which includes a season-high 16 against SMSU. That was the fourth time this season IU has been in double figures in steals. The 16 steals ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history. IU has 90 (10 spg) steals in the victories but just 22 (5.5 spg) in the losses.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held four opponents under 40% (accomplished this 13 times last year in 33 games). The opponents are shooting 43.2% coming into today's game. In the victories, Indiana has held the opponents to 41.7% from the field and forced them into 164 turnovers which includes an opponents season-high 25 by USF. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 46.2% and have turned the ball over 62 times. Iowa's 89 points was an opponent season-high and only the third time this season the Hoosiers have allowed 80 or more points.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 5-1 while leading at halftime, 4-2 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 23-2 in the last 25 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.
MARGIN MATERIAL: Each of Indiana's wins this season have been by at least 7 points. The average margin of victory is 14.1 ppg while the loss margin stands at 9.8. Only four of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points P at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3), vs. South Alabama (+8) and vs. Western Michigan (+7).
SCORING SOME POINTS: The Hoosiers enter today's game averaging 74.9 points per game. Indiana averages 78.7 ppg in the wins but just 66.5 ppg in the losses. The 76 points in the loss to Iowa was Indiana's highest in a loss this year. Indiana's season-high was 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawai'i. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have already matched this number through 12 games.
80 IS A MAGIC NUMBER: Indiana has won all five of its games this season where it has scored 80 or more points. Over the last three years, Indiana is 21-5 when scoring at least 80 points.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven years with a average of 79.9 points per game.IAs strange as it might sound, no Indiana player has ever recorded a triple-double.
WINNING WAYS: The Hoosiers have had 27 consecutive winning seasons. Every Coach Knight team at IU has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of 26) non-losing conference seasons during Knight's tenure.
ONE OF THE NATION'S ELITE: Indiana is one of the top schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU ranks 12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentage.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: All-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an impressive 323-43 (.882) including a 193-36 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 90-10 (.900) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 61-23 (.726) against ranked teams in Assembly Hall.
