Hoosiers struggle at Big Ten Singles Championships
Montilla takes first to matches to advance to quarterfinals
East Lansing, MI--Indiana's men's tennis squad traveled to East Lansing, MI., this weekend to compete in the annual Big Ten Singles Championships. The Hoosiers youth and inexperience was quickly shown, however, as only one Hoosier advanced past his first match.
The Hoosiers Gabriel Montilla, playing in place of the injured Derek Pope, took the competition by suprise. The sophomore defeated Northwestern's Derrick Neuyen, 4-6,6-3,7-6(6-2), to advance to the afternoons third round. In that round Montilla pulled out another surprise, knocking off Michigan's Arvid Swann, 5-7,7-5,6-3, to advance to tommorrow's quarterfinal action.
Although the rest of the squad did not advance to the next round of the main draw, several players found success in the back draw. Results were not immediately availabe for these matches, and will be posted in tommorrows release.
Indiana will continue play tommorrow with the next two round of the main and back draws being played beginning at 12 pm, noon.
