Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana back Nick Garcia was named the Freshman of the Year by Soccer America, adding to the list of accolades he has piled up in his first season. Last month, Garcia became a third team All-America selection, and had already been named as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Garcia, a native of Plano, Texas, led the Hoosier defense that had an 0.54 goals against average. IU reached the national semifinals and had an unbeaten streak of 23 games. He also scored three goals, including the game-winner in the Big Ten championship match against Ohio State, and had two assists for a total of eight points.
Garcia was joined by fellow freshman Matt Fundenberger, who was also named to the All-Freshman Team. Fundenberger finished third on the Hoosiers in goals with 13 and added two assists for a total of 28 points in just 1180 minutes of play. Fundenberger scored the game-winning goal in the third overtime of the Hoosiers 2-1 victory over Butler in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
