HOOSIERS ESCAPE EAST LANSING WITH A VICTORY
East Lansing, MI--Indiana's men's swimming and diving team won its fourth dual meet in a row by defeating Big Ten rival Michigan State, 133-110. The Hoosiers used a strong performance by the diving team and number of finishes in the top four to take the victory. Although the team won, head coach Kris Kirchner wasn't pleased with his team's performance. "They definitely outswam us, even though we won." He continued, "We were really flat, maybe it was the seven hour bus ride, I don't know, but it wasn't a good performance. We better be a lot better on Saturday."
Winners for the Hoosiers included Mike Collier on the one-meter and Tom Davidson on the three-meter. Collier won with a score of 325.80, and Davidson had 349.65, his best and the team's best score this season on the three-meter.
Sophomore Ben Hunter won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:25.54 with Rob Chelle and Chris Gage finishing third and fourth. Freshman Don Gold won the 100 freestyle in :46.99, and the 400 free relay team of Tom Wanezek, Tony Manna, Justin Schnute, and Duke Shin won in a time of 3:09.39.
The best race of the day for the Hoosiers was the 200 individual medley with Rob Iglinski, Kyle Goodrich, and Tom Davis finishing one, two, and three. Iglinski won in a time of 1:53.58. Second, third, and fourth finishes in the 200 back, 200 breast, and 50 free also kept the Hoosiers ahead throughout the meet.
Indiana is once again in the Speedo America's top 25 at 25th place. The
Hoosiers fell out of the poll in mid-January, but received enough points
in the January 29 rankings to make the top 25. They will be facing
seventh-ranked Michigan tomorrow at 12:00pm in the Canham Natatorium in
Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
