Release Notes
SLOW START: Indiana is off to a 0-2 Big Ten start for the first time since 1988. However, a slow start to conference play in the past has led to successful season. This is the fifth time in Coach Knight's 27 years the Hoosiers have started at least 0-2 in league play (0-2 four times, 0-4 once). Here's a look at those slow starts and the finishes that followed them.

CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is now seventh on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 223 (Greg Graham is sixth with 246). Guyton also needs 22 3-pointers to move into seventh on that all-time list and surpass Steve Alford who had 107. Andrae Patterson now has 1,101 career points which is tied for 26th on the all-time scoring list with Vernon Payne (Quinn Buckner is 25th at 1,195 points).
JUST WONDERING: The last time Indiana lost to Iowa (before last week's loss) at home was back on Feb. 21, 1991. The Hoosiers then went on a 50-game home winning streak which lasted from Feb. 24, 1991 to Jan. 24, 1995.
BEST FOOT FORWARD: A number of Hoosiers posted season-highs in the game at Illinois. The following list are all season-highs. William Gladness' 9 field goals and 36 minutes, Michael Lewis' 3 3-point field goals (also career-high) and 12 points and Charlie Miller's 5 rebounds.
THE BIG FOUR: A.J. Guyton, Luke Recker, Andrae Patterson and Rob Turner are the top scorers for the Hoosiers. In fact the quartet has accounted for 63.1% (660-1,046) of Indiana's scoring this season.
PATTERSON ON THE RISE: Andrae Patterson's stats and play has been on the rise. In the last five games he is averaging 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. During those same five games, he has blocked 7 shots and registered 7 steals. His rebounding average of 6.6 is just 0.1 off his career season best of 6.7 set last year.
COMEBACK KIDS: The victory over Western Michigan marked the fourth time this season the Hoosiers have overcome a halftime deficit and won the game. Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 4-3. This record also includes wins over UAB, South Alabama and USF Indiana is overcome a 22-point second half deficit Saturday at Illinois to tie the game.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers broke a six-game sub-50% streak by shooting 50.9% (27-53) at Illinois. The mark was helped by a 65.4% (17-26) second half. This was the third time this year IU has shot better than 60% in a half, all of which were second halves. That shouldn't really be much of a surprise as the Hoosiers have been a good second half shooting team as they had shot 50% or better in the second half 10 of the last 11 games. The Hoosiers shooting percentage stands at 48.1% coming into tonight's game. That mark is still above last season's 43.8% team mark. Three Hoosiers P William Gladness (54.4%), Rob Turner (53.8%) and Luke Recker (50.4%) P are shooting at least 50% from the field. The Hoosiers have shot 49.7% (255-513) in their victories but just 45.1% (123-273) in the losses. Last season the Hoosiers shot better than 50% only three times but have done so five times this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has shot better than 70% in each of the last three games (42-54, 77.8%) after a three-game sub-70% stretch. Indiana's season-high is 94.1% (16-17) against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history. Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game at 71.8%. Michael Lewis is the top player at 33-39 (84.6%). In the their victories IU has made 161 free throws while the opponents have attempted 143. In the losses the opponents have almost twice as many attempts (100) as IU does free throws (58). The Hoosiers are shooting 74.2% from the line in the victories but just 65.4% in the losses.
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers made 6-15 from beyond the arc at Illinois to break a poor three-game 3-point shooting streak which had the team under 30% in all three games (11-49, 22.4%). Still, Indiana has failed to shot at least 40% in a game in six of the last eight contests. The Hoosiers did not even attempt a 3-point shot in the second half of the SW Missouri State game but a set a school record with 25 against Iowa. Indiana is shooting 33.6% on the season. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 30-78 (38.5%). A.J. Guyton leads the team with 30 treys and he, Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 59 of the Hoosiers 71 3-pointers. IU is shooting 37.4% in the losses but 30.8% in the victories.
THE BOARD REPORT: Indiana "rebounded" from its -21 margin against Iowa to outrebound Illinois 33-31. Prior to the Iowa game, Indiana had been doing a good job on the boards averaging 41.5 boards per game in two previous contests. Iowa's 48 rebounds was an opponents season-high while the 27 IU boards was just two off a season-low. Indiana's rebounding margin is +1.4. The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in three of their losses and are at a -2.0 margin in the losses. IU has registered 40+ rebounds five times. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding in eight games.
ASSISTS ANGLE: IU has registered at least 17 assists in each of the last six games. They have also had at least as many assists as turnovers in each of the last eight games. The Hoosiers have registered 20 or more assists five times this season. The Hoosiers have averaged 19.5 in the last 11 games after an average of just 11.7 in the first three games. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success this season. In the victories they have 176 (19.5) assists but just 74 (14.8) in the losses. Indiana's assists to turnovers ratio (+30) is at its highest mark of the season.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers have been taking care of the ball as they have averaged just 13.9 turnovers per game in the last seven contests. This stretch includes a season-low 10 vs. UW-Green Bay. This average is below the season average of 15.7 per game. In the victories the Hoosiers have turned the ball over 127 times (14.1 tpg) while in the losses that number inflates to 93 (18.6 tpg). Indiana has registered nine games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 53 blocks this season but 43 of those have come in the victories. The Hoosiers have had only 5 in the two Big Ten games after averaging 4.5 a game in the four previous contests. Andrae Patterson (16) leads the team.
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana has averaged 9.3 steals per game over the last seven games which includes a season-high 16 against SMSU. The Hoosiers had only 5 at Illinois which was the first time in seven games they have had less than 7. The 16 steals vs.. SMSU ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history. IU has 90 (10 spg) steals in the victories but just 27 (5.4 spg) in the losses.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held four opponents under 40% (accomplished this 13 times last year in 33 games). The opponents are shooting 43.2% coming into tonight's game. In the victories, Indiana has held the opponents to 41.7% from the field and forced them into 164 turnovers which includes an opponents season-high 25 by USF. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 45.7% and have turned the ball over 72 times. Iowa's 89 points was an opponent season-high and only the third time this season the Hoosiers have allowed 80 or more points.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 5-1 while leading at halftime, 4-3 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 23-2 in the last 25 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.
MARGIN MATERIAL: Each of Indiana's wins this season have been by at least 7 points. The average margin of victory is 14.1 ppg while the loss margin stands at 8.2. Only five of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points P at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3), vs. South Alabama (+8), vs. Western Michigan (+7) and at Illinois (-2).
SCORING SOME POINTS: The Hoosiers enter today's game averaging 74.7 points per game. Indiana averages 78.7 ppg in the wins but just 67.6 ppg in the losses. The 76 points in the loss to Iowa was Indiana's highest in a loss this year. Indiana's season-high was 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawai'i. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have already matched this number through 12 games.
80 IS A MAGIC NUMBER: Indiana has won all five of its games this season where it has scored 80 or more points. Over the last three years, Indiana is 21-5 when scoring at least 80 points.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven years with a average of 79.9 points per game.... As strange as it might sound, no Indiana player has ever recorded a triple-double... The Hoosiers have had 27 consecutive winning seasons. Every Coach Knight team at IU has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of 26) non-losing conference seasons during Knight's tenure.
ONE OF THE NATION'S ELITE: Indiana is one of the top schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU ranks 12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentage.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: All-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an impressive 323-43 (.882) including a 193-36 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 90-10 (.900) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 61-23 (.726) against ranked teams in Assembly Hall.
NEXT UP: The Hoosiers host Ohio State Saturday (Jan. 10) at Assembly Hall. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be televised on the air ESPN-Plus network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis.
