Indiana falls to Michigan State in OT, 38-31
East Lansing, Mich. -- Heartbreak. For the third time in five games this season Indiana has seen a fourth-quarter lead disappear against a heavy favorite. Today, after overcoming a 16-0 deficit to take a 24-16 fourth-quarter lead, a valiant IU football team fell to the Michigan State Spartans, 38-31, in overtime. Michigan State running back Sedrick Irvin's 25-yard touchdown run on the first play of double-overtime was the difference as Indiana failed on its last try in overtime.
Indiana (2-3, 0-2) took the fourth-quarter lead when quarterback Antwaan Randle El scored on an eight-yard TD run 5:35 into the fourth quarter. Randle El, who finished the game 16-10-147-0-0 passing and a career-high 12-134-1TD rushing, was forced to leave the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a concussion.
After the Indiana score, Michigan State (3-3, 1-1) quarterback Bill Burke (37-24-324-1-INT-2TDs) completed all four pass attempts on MSU's next drive which culminated with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Gari Scott (6-82-1TD-24LG). Burke scored on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:28 remaining.
Indiana started with the ball first in overtime with junior quarterback Jay Rodgers at the helm. Rodgers, IU's starter last season, threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to true freshman tight end Craig Osika. However, Michigan State would score on the first play of its next possession as Burke hit WR Plaxico Burress (7-113-1TD) for a 25-yard touchdown.
On a 4th-n-12, cornerback Lemar Marshall blasted IU sophomore wide receiver Tyrone Browning on a pass across the middle that resulted in an incompletion that ended the game.
-- Indiana sacked MSU quarterback Bill Burke six times, three of those by junior DT Damian Gregory, a Lansing, Mich., native.
-- RB Frankie Franklin, who saw his most extensive action of the season, finished 17-75-1TD rushing. He scored on a 2nd-n-7 from the MSU-11 in the third qtr. that closed the State advantage to 16-10.
-- K Andy Payne connected on a 32-yard field goal in the 2nd qtr. to extend his consecutive field goal streak to eight. He is 8-8 on field goals this year.
-- Indiana junior DE Adewale Ogunleye moved into first place on the all-time
IU career tackle for loss list with 45 (passed Van Waiters who tallied 44
from 1983-87.) Ogunleye had 1 tackle for loss, a sack for -11 yards, in
today's game vs. Michigan State. He also recovered a fumble.
