HOOSIERS WIN 2-1 IN OVERTIME
Evansville, Ind.
Whenever Indiana and Evansville meet in soccer there is bound to be something weird happen and that is exactly what happened in Sunday's 2-1 overtime victory by the Hoosiers.
Overtime. There should have never been one.
With four seconds remaining in regulation and the Hoosiers winning 1-0, Evansville, Michael Lue made a throw-in from 40 yards away from the Indiana goal. The ball ended up at the feet of Nick Potter who flicked it ahead to Steve Nugent at the top of the penalty area.
Indiana goalkeeper T.J. Hannig came out to gather the ball but Nugent blasted the ball past him and into the net with the clock showing no time remaining. While the Evansville players began to celebrate, the Indiana coaching staff and players were saying "no goal".
Head referee Rich Huber conferred with the linesmen for about a minute away from all of the yelling and decided the goal counted and the game was going to overtime.
"I was watching the clock the entire play and counting with the fourth (sideline) official," Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "I can't explain what happened after that, I was just disappointed with the referee's decision because time had expired."
After a sorting out of the situation, the teams returned to the field for the extra sudden victory periords. And it didn't take the Hoosiers long to put the game away.
Just four minutes into the first extra period, IU's Lazo Alavanja controlled the ball in the midfield and started through the Evansville defense. The UE players thought they wee going to control the ball and were caught going on offense.
Alavanja made them pay for that mistake and dribble for 20 yards and made a crips pass to Aleksey Korol on the right wing. Korol easily beat the last Evansville defender and blasted a shot from 12 yards out past goalkeeper Chuck Browder for the game winner.
"Aleksey is really on form recently," Yeagley said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence right now and has really stepped up his play."
As has happened this season, the Hoosiers once again had a difficult time converting some easier chances during the game. As a team Indiana had 17 shots but Browder had to make only four saves.
It appeared the Hoosiers were going to record the victory after scoring at the 82:00 mark on an odd goal.
Indiana lost control of the ball in the penalty area but UE's Brad Henderson played the ball back to Browder who played the ball with his hands which consitituted an Evansville foul giving the Hoosiers a indirect kick just six yards out from the goal and just to the left of the net.
The Hoosiers set up a play where Dema Kovalenko would touch the ball and Yuri Lavrinenko would take the kick. The kick found its way into the net in the far right hand corner.
"We actually practice that every once in a while," Lavrinenko said. "Itwas just a placement kick and luckly it went in."
That score could have easily been the second of the day for the Hoosiers as with 27 minutes to play a goal was disallowed by an offsides call which could have gone Indiana's way.
Ryan Mack's shot rebounded off Browder and Korol was there to put the ball in the net, but the linesmen said Kovalenko was offsides although he jumped over Browder to make sure the ball was in the net.
"This was just a great win under very frustrating cicumstances," Yeagley said.
