INDIANA UPSETS MICHIGAN STATEBLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team, led by sophomore Amanda Welter's career high 22 kills upset No. 21 Michigan State 15-12, 11-15, 15-13, 15-13 Friday evening at University Gym.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 9-3 overall, 2-1 in Big Ten play while the Spartans fall to 8-3 overall, 1-2 in the Big Ten.
Indiana used a strong defensive effort to power its offensive game all evening, registering 81 kills and a .234 attack percentage. The Hoosiers also took advantage of the Spartans at the service line with nine service aces, including a career-high four aces by Ryann Connors.
After trading games one and two, the Hoosiers came out the intermission on a fire, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. But after a Michigan State timeout, the Spartans outscored the Hoosiers 6-1 to tie the game at 10-all. After falling behind 11-12, IU rolled off three more points to take game three 15-13.
The Hoosiers fell behind 0-4 to start game four before tying the game at 6-all. After ties at 9-all, 10-all, 11-all and 13-all, the Hoosiers strong performance at the service line came into play as Amand Welter aced a serve to tie the game at 13-all. A kill by Laura Mettes on the next play put the Hoosiers up 14-all before the game and match was settled for good with an ace serve by Jen Magelssen.
Several career bests were set by the Hoosiers as Amanda Welter added a career-high 12 digs to go along with her personal-best 22 kills. Defensive specialist Erin Heimann added a career-high 21 digs while Laura Mettes pounded home a career-high 14 kills.
Outside hitters Ryann Connors and Jen Magelssen also registered double-figure kill nights with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.
"It was nice to come out and play like we are capable tonight," said Katie Weismiller. "It was a total team effort and that makes the win even more special. We did a nice job both offensively and defensively tonight and we did a nice job serving from the line.
The Hoosiers will be back in action
tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3, hosting
Michigan at 7 p.m., at University
Gym.
