Fleetwood, Pa.-Indiana played in front of a head coach Jerry Yeagley's friends and family Friday night as the Hoosiers played near his Myerstown, PA home. Those people got more than their money's worth as the Hoosiers got an overtime win 1-0 over No. 20 Penn State.
"It's great to come back here. I saw so many of my former teammates and my former high school coach. We treated them to an attractive brand of soccer tonight," Yeagley said.
The game probably should have won the game in regulation as the Hoosiers had numerous chances in the second half and earlier in over time. Lazo Alavanja was denied twice the game winning goal in the 73rd minute and in the 93rd minute as long blasts were tipped over the cross bar by Penn State goalie Whit Gibson.
Dema Kovalenko also had a chance to win game at the 70 minute mark as he made a hard shot from 12 yards out after making a long run through the Penn State defense, but Gibson dove to his left to make the save.
The winning goal was scored in the 101th minute as Dema Kovalenko played an indirect free kick toward the PSU goal, which Yuri Lavrinenko headed in from 8 yards out.
"On the direct kick, I am suppose to pick for Alexsey (Korol) and Matt (Fundenberger) and let them go through and curl back around because the ball could go past them," Yuri Lavrinenko said. "This time it did and I connected."
Penn Stats's best scoring chance in regulation came shortly after halftime with a shot from 22 yards out. The ball appeared to go into the upper right part of the goal, but T. J. Hannig made the save.
PSU had another chance to score in the 94th minute during overtime as a corner kick by Mayy Leahy was not controlled by TJ Hannig, but was quickly cleared by the IU defense.
The Hoosiers dominated the second and overtime as 10 of their 13 shots came after intermission, while PSU was held to just 3 shots after halftime. The Hoosiers also dominated offensively with 13 corner kicks to PSU's 2 corners.
"I am please with the way we played," coach Jerry Yeagley said. "But I was frustrated we could not scored earlier in the game. I have to credit their goalie for making some fantastic saves."
