IU WOMEN'S GOLF, CARNEY READY TO PLAY IN CALIFORNIA
Tournament Data: The 35th Stanford/Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate will be held on Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25th in Stanford, California. Stanford, the host school, is also the defending champion of the tournament. The Intercollegiate features ten of the top 25 ranked teams in the nation, according to MasterCard Collegiate Golf Poll. The 54 hole event will be played at Stanford Golf course, a par 73, covering 6,093 yards. Friday and Saturday's rounds will begin at 8:00 am off the first and tenth tees and Sunday's round will be a shotgun starting at 8:30 a.m.
Teams (18 - ranking in parenthesis): Arizona (2), Arizona State (3), California, Indiana (16), New Mexico, New Mexico State (18), Oregon (12), Oregon State (20), Penn State, Pepperdine, San Jose State, SMU, Texas A&M (21), Texas Tech, UCLA, USC (4), Washington (25), Washington State.
The Hoosiers: Coach Sam Carmichael will take seniors Erin Carney and Jennifer Seger, juniors Sami Montgomery and Theresa McDermott, and freshman Tiffany Fisher.
Carney is coming off an individual win at the Big Ten/Big Twelve Shoot Out in Franklin, Indiana. Her rounds of 69-74-71 lowered her season stroke average to 74. Carney also won the first tournament of the year, the Lady Northern in Lafayette, Indiana.
Seger has improved her play of late. After a slow start at the Lady Northern, she came back with a tie for 10th at the Bama Fall Preview in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She brings a stroke average of 80.9 into this tournament.
Montgomery started her season nicely with a tie for 16th at the Lady Northern, but fell back to 49th place at the Bama Fall Preview. Her stroke average of 80 is second on the team.
McDermott got off to a slow start, but has turned her game around. At the Lady Northern, she finished tied for 44th, with a tournament average of 84. But at Big 10/Big Twelve Shoot-Out, she tied for 35th, bringing her season average down to 80.8
Fisher is a true freshman whom Carmichael thinks has a lot of potential. She has been a solid performer in the two tournaments she has played in. In her first collegiate tournament, the Lady Northern, she carded rounds of 80-80-79 to finish tied for 12th. Although she faltered at the Bama Fall Preview, finishing tied for 74th, her season average of 80.6 is third on the team.
