Lexington, Ky. -- Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley has wanted his team to score more often when the opportunity has presented itself and that was just the case in a 5-0 victory over Kentucky Wednesday night.
The Hoosiers scored their five goals and just 12 shots. That came after a weekend where Indiana had 45 shots in two games and scored just four times.
"It's nice to see us get some goals," Yeagley said. "Once we got the second it opened up the defense and created good chances for us."
The first chance came in the 12th minute when Dema Kovalenko converted an indirect free kick from 22 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal. The goal was the junior's 38th of his career which moved into 9th place on IU's all-time goal scoring list.
Later in the first half, Yeagley moved Ryan Mack from his midfield position to forward and it paid a quick dividend. Mack scooped up a pass and dribbled around UK goalkeeper Brian O'Leary and deposited the ball in the goal for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Hoosiers then sealed the game for good as they scored twice in the 52nd minute.
Lazo Alavnaja scored the third goal of the night as he spun around a defender and used his left foot to blast the ball into the net from 25 yards out. Right after the game re-started with the kickoff, IU's Aleksey Korol stole the ball from an UK player and tried to dribble through the defense. He was stopped for a split second but the ball went through the Kentucky defense and back to Korol who gathered it and scored from 10 yards out just 32 seconds after Alavanja's goal.
Bloomington's Eric Ripley entered the match and got into the scoring column quickly as he converted a header off a pass from B.J. Snow just 20 seconds after he entered the match for the final Indiana score of the night.
"It was nice to get a chance to play some of our reserves tonight," Yeagley said. "We have a Big Ten showdown with Ohio State Sunday so I wanted to come out of this game with our players healthy and rested and I think we accomplished that."
If Indiana wins Sunday in Columbus the team will win the outright regular season conference title and be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament to be played in November in Evanston, Ill.
