IU VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY NO. 2 PENN STATE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team fought a difficult battle Friday evening before dropping its fifth-straight match to No. 2 Penn State 15-9, 15-6, 15-6 in front of a season-high 1,143 fans at University Gym.
With the loss, the Hoosiers drop to 10-8 overall, 3-6 in Big Ten play while the Nittany Lions remain undefeated at 19-0 overall and 9-0 in the Big Ten.
Although the scores did not reflect the Hoosiers' play, Indiana played tough defense and held Penn State to just a .282 attack percentage, well below their .364 season average.
Middle blocker Cydryce Carter led IU with a double-double, registering 10 kills and 13 digs. Teammate Ryann Connors also added 10 kills.
All-American Lauren Cacciamani led Penn State with 13 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.
"This was a very tough match," said Katie Weismiller. "Penn State is the No. 2 team in the country for a reason. Although the scores didn't indicate the type of match it was, we came out and competed with them and I believe played a good match. They tipped us to death and we didn't adjust to that and that is what hurt us tonight."
"It is always a tough match when we play Indiana," said Penn State head coach Russ Rose. "Indiana is a scrappy team that plays tough defensively and handles the ball well. I knew that we would have to work very hard tonight if we were to win the match."
The Hoosiers will be back in action tomorrow, hosting No. 21 Ohio State, Saturday, Oct. 24, at University Gym.
