WOMEN'S GOLF IN SECOND PLACE AFTER FIRST DAYCARNEY TIED FOR LEAD
Stanford, Calif., The IU women's golf team is in second place after firing an opening round of 293, leaving them just five strokes shy of the host, Stanford at 288. IU, presently ranked 16th by MasterCard Collegiate Golf Poll, is ahead of some the top ranked teams in the nation: #2 Arizona 298, #3 Arizona State 305, #4 USC 305, and #12 Oregon 302.
Senior Erin Carney has grabbed a share of the lead after today's opening round, turning in a three under-par 70. Carney is tied with Elisha Au of Washington, who also shot 70. Carney played a solid round, carding a 35 on each nine holes of the golf course.
According to Coach Sam Carmichael, his team opened this tournament stronger than any other tournament all year. "We had a good day today," Carmichael said. "Carney played real solid. Seger played an excellent round." "It was a nice start," he continued. "Hopefully we can continue the good play for the rest of the tournament."
Carmichael also added that freshman Tiffany Fisher really played well today. "Fisher played her best round of the year."
The tournament will continue Saturday and Sunday, with 18 holes to be
played each day. Saturday's round will be start at 8:00 am and Sunday will
be shotgun start beginning at 8:30 am.
