Hoosiers Continue Their Strong Play
Champaign, Ill.--After a three week layoff, the Hoosiers started the three-day Fighting Illini Invite very strong today. The Hoosiers playing over in Champaign, Illinois, competed against players from Miami (OH) in both singles and doubles, and against players from Iowa in singles action.
In singles action, the Hoosiers continued their strong play, as they swept DePaul in all seven matches and lost only two of the seven matches to Iowa. Sophomore Ian Arons, playing at the number one position, defeated Tyler Cleveland of Iowa 4-6,6-4,6-3, then defeated Champy Halim of Miami (OH) 6-4,6-7,6-4. At number two, junior Gabriel Montilla lost his first match to Iowa's Petar Mandic 6-4,6-3, then bounced back to defeat Gareth Quin of Miami (OH) 6-1,6-2. At the number three, sophomore Paul Jacobson won both of his matches, first knocking off J.R. Chidley of Iowa 6-2,6-0, then defeated Miami (OH)'s 6-0,6-3. Sophomore Milan Rakvica, playing at the number four, won his first match over Iowa's Tom Buetikofer 6-3,6-3, then went on to defeat Steve van der Westhuzyen 6-0,6-2. At the five spot, Sophomore Brendan Storey defeated Iowa's Jason Dunn 7-5,7-6(6), then defeated B.J. Munroe 7-5,6-4. Junior Ricardo Jordan, the sixth-seed, lost his first match to Iowa's Ben Bamsey 4-6,6-4,6-4, then came back to defeat Miami (OH)'s Brent Lehring 6-4,6-2. At the seventh position, sophomore Joey Balsiger first defeated Iowa's Ulf Jentler 6-7,6-4,6-0, then defeated Miami (OH)'s Brett Richardson 4-6,6-3,6-2.
Like yesterday, the Hoosiers split their doubles todayv against Miami of Ohio. The number one team of Arons and Montilla lost to Champy Halim and Scott Rutherford 9-8. The number two team of Jacobson and Rakvica defeated Gareth Quin and Steve van der Westhuzyen 8-1. Freshman Rahman Smiley and Jordan Amin Nabli and B.J. Munroe 8-5. At four doubles, Storey and Balsiger lost to Vinay Reddy and Mario Contardi 8-6.
The Hoosier's will continue tomorrow with action in both singles and
doubles, as they finish up the weekend invitational.
