IU VOLLEYBALL KNOCKS OFF NO. 23 OHIO STATE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ­ Indiana's volleyball team took a step in the right direction Saturday evening, snapping its string of five-straight losses and upsetting No. 23 Ohio State 17-15, 15-4, 15-11
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 11-8 overall, 4-6 in Big Ten play while the Buckeyes fall to 10-9 overall, 3-7 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers came out on fire in game one, taking an early 11-5 lead. But after an OSU timeout, the Buckeyes outscored the Hoosiers 9-2 to tie the game 14-all. After another tie at 15, IU was able to roll off two-straight points to take the game.
Indiana never let down in game two pulling ahead 14-2 before winning 15-4.
The Hoosiers led 10-5 in game three but a 6-0 run by the Buckeyes put OSU up 11-10. IU came back to tie the game 11-all and then finished the match by scoring the next four straight points for the victory.
Four Hoosiers posted double-digit kill totals, led by Jen Magelssen who registered 16 kills and 11 digs. Teammate Ryann Connors added 14 kills while Cydryce Carter and Melissa Rooney tallied 13 and 12 kills apiece, respectively. Carter also led the Hoosiers with a match-high six blocks.
As a team, IU posted a .346 attack percentage compared to Ohio State's .162.
"It is nice to win," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "We had a lot of confidence heading into this match and we played as a team. I also think that the play of Melissa Rooney was key this weekend. She came in and did an outstanding job for us."
The Hoosiers will be back in action next week, traveling to Michigan
and Michigan State Oct. 30-31.
