Michigan pulls away late to defeat Indiana, 21-10
The Indiana University football team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., today to take on the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines. After a 7-7 halftime tie, the Maize and Blue pulled away in the second half to clinch a 21-10 decision. Michigan improved its record to 5-2 overall (4-0 in the Big Ten) while the Hoosiers fell to 3-4 overall. Indiana has a 1-3 record in the Big Ten Conference.
In the first quarter, Michigan was forced to punt on its first possession of the game and Indiana took over at the UM-41 with 13:58 remaining in the quarter. A 12-yard run by redshirt freshman quarterback Antwaan Randle El, and a 26-yd. screen pass from Randle El to junior running back Frankie Franklin, helped set up a 1-yd touchdown run by fullback Chris Gall on a 2nd-n-goal play that gave IU a 7-0 lead with 10:07 remaining in the quarter.
Indiana's lead would stand until 1:15 remaining in the second quarter when Michigan running back Anthony Thomas (20-66-1TD rushing) dove over left guard for a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point evened the game at 7-7 and it stayed that way until halftime. Indiana held Michigan to 29 rushing yards in the first half.
Midway through the third quarter the Wolverines took over at the IU-43. Quarterback Tom Brady (27-18-210-2TDs-1INT) was sacked for a 9-yard loss by junior defensive end Adewale Ogunleye. After a 1-yd. run on second down, Brady hit wide receiver Tai Streets (8-117-51LG-2TDs) on the 10-yd. line and Streets went in for a 51-yd. touchdown reception to give Michigan a 14-7 lead.
Indiana would answer right back on its next possession. On a 2nd-n-7 from the IU-23, Franklin went off right guard for 59 yards, moving the Hoosiers to the UM-18. Four plays later sophomore kicker Andy Payne connected on a 31-yard field goal attempt to close Michigan's lead to 14-10.
Michigan would take over on its own 12-yard line after the field goal and put together an impressive 19-play, 88-yard, drive that lasted 9:56. On a 3rd-n-goal from the IU-4, Brady hit Streets on a fade route in the left corner of the end zone to increase the Michigan lead to 21-10.
Randle El rushed for 109 yards. It was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season. Indiana true freshman safety Greg Yeldell tallied three interceptions. He has four interceptions in the last two games and became the fifth player in IU history to intercept three passes in a game and the first since Tim Wilbur at Illinois on November 10, 1979.
Indiana will return to Bloomington on Saturday, October 31, to host top-ranked Ohio State. The game, which will be nationally televised by ABC, is sold out.
