IU Falls to #13 Wisconsin, 24-20
The Indiana University football team hosted the 13th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers
today before 32,328 at Memorial Stadium and a national television audience
on ESPN2. Despite leading 13-3 early in the third quarter the Hoosiers fell
to the Badgers, 24-20, in a see-saw battle that was played in drizzly, 52
degree, weather.
"You feel like you go out and outplay someone again and you come up short," said head coach Cam Cameron. "It's awfully difficult. I think if you go through the game we outplayed them in every category with the exception we had one turnover and they didn't have any. We had a tough time overcoming the turnover. They control the ball. It's tough. It's tough."
Indiana (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) broke into the scoring column first when sophomore K Andy Payne connected on a 30-yard field goal with 8:16 remaining in the first quarter. It would take Wisconsin (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) until midway through the second quarter before K Matt Davenport would hit on a 42-ydr. to tie the game at 3-3.
Just prior to the end of the first half the Hoosiers took over on a 1st-n-10 from the 50-yard line. On first down, freshman quarterback Antwaan Randle El (19-10-2INT-145 yards passing, 23-34 rushing) rushed 17 yards to the WI-33. That run would help set up a 45-yard field goal by Payne to close the first half. It was Payne's seventh consecutive field goal of the season.
Indiana would tally first again in the second half as sophomore wide receiver Derin Graham would receive the opening kickoff and return it 100 yards for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by an IU player since 1981 when Duane Gunn had a 97-yard return for a score at Syracuse.
Wisconsin WR Chris Chambers (4-45-1TD-18LG) scored the first of two consecutive touchdowns by the Badgers in the third quarter when he scored on an 18-yd. reception from QB Mike Samuel (15-9-117-1TD passing). On 1st-n-10 from the IU-14 on the ensuing drive, Randle El was intercepted by Jamar Fletcher at the IU-31. Wisconsin would take advantage as RB Ron Dayne (28-130-1TD-48LG) carried five times for 15 yards on the drive and Samuel scored on a 1-yd. TD run on a 3rd-n-1 to give the Badgers the lead, 17-13.
IU would answer right back as the Hoosiers put together an 8-play, 80-yard, drive. RB Marcus Floyd (12-68-15LG rushing) was 3-27 on the drive and FB Chris Gall (14-44-1TD rushing, 3-20 receiving) scored on a 4-yd. TD run to give the Hoosiers a 20-17 lead with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter.
Dayne, who became just the ninth junior in college history to rush for over 4,000 yards and the second fastest ever to do so (28 games second only to Herschel Walker's 27 games) in the game, would cap a 9-play, 66-yard, drive with a 4-yd. TD run that put Wisconsin back on top to stay, 24-20.
IU would not quit and went on a 17-play, 8:29 drive that moved the Hoosiers as close as the W-22 but a pass from Randle El to Graham on a 4th-n-16 from the IU-28 fell incomplete in the end zone.
Indiana would get the ball back with 1:17 remaining in the contest but Randle El was intercepted by Jason Doering at the IN-25 to end the threat.
Junior defensive end Adewale Ogunleye tied the Indiana career record for tackles for loss. His two tackles for loss today gives him a career total of 44, tying him with Van Waiters who played for the Hoosiers from 1983-87.
Indiana will return to the road next week when the Hoosiers visit Michigan State. The game will be televised by ESPN and will begin at 11:10 a.m. EST/12:10 p.m. EDT.
