No. 24 Hoosiers Lose to Purdue 3-2WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In the tradition of rivalries, Friday night's match for the prized Monon Spike went down to the wire as the Hoosiers and Boilermakers battled it out for two hours and 40 minutes before Purdue was crowned victor, defeating the Hoosiers 15-10, 11-15, 11-15, 15-8, 15-13.
The deciding game five went down to the last serve with the rallied scored game tied at 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-all. The Hoosiers trailed 13-14 before a kill by Purdue's Bev Krupa gave the Boilermakers the 15-13 victory.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in game one but after that it was all Purdue as the Boilers tied the game at four and then went up 9-5. Indiana attempted a comback, pulling within two points at 10-8 but Purdue rolled off five unanswered points to go up 14-8 and win the game 15-10.
Indiana fell behind 8-1 in game two but came back to even things up at 9-all and then pull ahead at 11-9. The Boilermakers charged back to tie the Hoosiers at 11-all before the Hoosiers served out the next four points to win 15-11.
Indiana came out of the intermission on fire, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in game three but the Boilers failed to fade, coming within one point at 9-8. IU responded with five unanswered points to go ahead 14-8. Pudue came as close as three of the Hoosiers at 14-11 before senior Jen Magelssen served out the game winning ace.
Game four belonged to the Boilers after breaking a 5-5 tie they rolled off five-straight points to lead 10-5 before winning 15-8 and focing a game five.
Indiana was led by Ryann Connors who registered a career-high 26 kills. Teammate Amanda Welter added 17 kills while Jen Magelssen and Laura Mettes each netted 14.
"Unfortunately, we did not play well
tonight," said Katie Weismiller.
"I don't think that either
team played their best ball. We didn't do
a very good job in several
areas. We justed couldn't get in a groove. We
played not to lose, we
didn't play this match to win."
