--14-9 Hoosiers fifth in Big Ten Conference
UP NEXT -- After winning four of the last five matches, the Hoosiers will be back on the road at Iowa and No. 8 Wisconsin. Friday's match in Iowa City will be televised on Fox Sports Chicago.
SET YOUR VCR -- Indiana's match against Iowa will be broadcast on tape delay. Fox Sports Chicago will televise the game on Sunday at 5 pm EST. This will be the Hoosiers second appearance on television as the defeated Michigan 3-0 on Oct. 3. Dave Loane will call the play by play and Angie Kammer will handle color analysis.
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS -- Indiana (14-9 overall, 7-7 Big Ten) moved out of the pack with a pair of wins over the weekend against No. 15 Illinois and Purdue. Ryann Connors led the way with 62 kills and 30 digs in the two matches. Her efforts earned her AVCA National Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week honors. The win over Illinois was Indiana's fourth this season against a team ranked in the top 25. In the Purdue match four school records fell. Connors set the school mark with 35 kills in a match and setter Kristina Sanderson tallied 93 kills for another record. Team totals of 112 kills and 109 assists were single match records as well.
CONNORS RECEIVES HONORS -- Junior outside hitter Ryann Connors received AVCA National and Big Ten Player of the Week honors for her performance in the two weekend matches. She is the second player in Indiana history to receive AVCA honors. Julie Flatley was recognized last year by the AVCA. Connors is also the second Hoosier this season to be named Big Ten Player of the Week as Amanda Welter was honored earlier in the season. She continues to lead the Hoosiers and ranks fifth in the Big Ten with her 4.65 kills per game average. The outside hitter has registered 20-plus kills in eighth matches and has tallied double-digit kills in 17 matches this season. In the last three matches, she has totaled 88 kills and has only four matches in which she has failed to get double-figure kills.
RECEIVING VOTES -- The Hoosiers received 11 votes this week in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. Previously, Indiana has been ranked as high as 24th in the national poll.
HOME SWEET HOME -- The Hoosiers are 10-2 when playing at home in University Gym this season compared to a 4-7 record on the road. With 10 victories at home, Indiana tied the school record which was set in 1988.
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller is in her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with an 87-94 (.481) school record and an eight-year career mark of 137-118 (.537). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
ABOUT IOWA -- The Hawkeyes will be looking for their first conference win of the season this weekend. They lost to Ohio State and Penn State last weekend, both in three straight games. Iowa is lead by outside hitter Julie Williams. Williams is averaging 4.30 kills per game. The Hoosiers won the first meeting this season 15-10, 15-13, 15-12 on Sept. 26. The Series: Indiana leads the all-time series 21-17 including the last four straight matches.
ON NO. 8 WISCONSIN -- Prior to the Badgers' Friday night match against Northwestern, Wisconsin is tied for second with Michigan State. Wisconsin defeated Ohio State and lost to Penn State last weekend. The loss to Penn State snapped a 15-game home winning streak. They are led by juniors Kelly Kennedy and Kate Fitzgerald. Kennedy averages 3.67 and Fitzgerald averages 3.04 kills per game. The Series: The Badgers lead the all-time series 23-17 and have won the last five.
DIGGING IN -- As the conference race heats up, so has the Hoosiers back row defense. Currently IU is fourth in the league for digs, averaging 14.45 per game and lists two players in the top 10 for digs. Jen Magelssen ranks fifth in the conference, averaging 2.74 digs per game while Erin Heimann ranks sixth with 2.72 digs per game.
LEADERBOARD WATCH -- Senior Jen Magelssen already holds the school record for career service aces (190) and digs (1,242) and is presently in pursuit of the school record for kills. Currently she ranks second on the all-time list with 1,321 kills and needs just 61 more to become the program's career leader.
ONE MORE -- Jen Magelssen tied the school record for double-figure kill matches in a career against Purdue. The record, which is 73 matches, was set by former Hoosier Liz Ambrustmacher (1985-88). Magelssen already holds the school record for double-digit dig matches with 64.
ANOTHER CLASSIC -- Saturday's match was the second five-game match this season with the Boilermakers. Four school records fell and numerous players had season and career high totals. Team records of 112 kills and 109 assists were set.
#3 Ryann Connors -- Connors set a career high and school record with 35 kills. She also set a career high with four assists.
#7 Kristina Sanderson -- The junior setter recorded a rare triple-double with 15 kills, 93 assists, and 11 digs. The 93 assists was a school record and career highs were set with the assists and 15 kills. She is ranked second in the Big Ten at 13.63 assists per game.
#12 Cydryce Carter -- Another junior, Carter posted a career high 21 kills. Her previous mark was 15 kills vs. Minnesota on Oct. 10, 1997.
BIG TEN TOUGHNESS -- Led by 1997 NCAA Division I runner-up Penn State, the Big Ten Conference has six teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Top 25 poll, more than any other conference. Undefeated Penn State is ranked No. 2 and is followed by No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 20 Illinois, No. 14 Michigan State and No. 25 Minnesota. Indiana is receiving votes.
