He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 1-0 vs. Indiana State both overall and at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Indiana State are meeting for the 17th time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 14-2. The last time the two schools met was Dec. 28, 1991 when IU defeated the Sycamores 94-44 in the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis. The teams have met only twice since 1924 with the only other game since then taking place in 1960 which was also the last time the teams played in Bloomington. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series in games played in Bloomington 8-1.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: Indiana begins the season ranked 17th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 22 in the AP poll. The Hoosiers were also ranked No. 12 by Street and Smith's, No. 21 by Blue Ribbon and No. 22 by Dick Vitale.
FAMILIAR FACE ON OTHER BENCH: This evening Coach Knight will take
on former assistant coach Royce Waltman (1983-87) who is now the head coach
of the Sycamores. Next Wednesday, Knight will face Murray Bartow of UAB
who was a graduate assistant at Indiana. Last season Knight faced four former
assistant or players and won all four games. As this season begins there
are 11 former Knight assistants or coaches who are now head coaches at either
the college or professional level.
HOOSIERS VS. THE MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE: Indiana is 37-8 all-time
vs. teams in the MVC with a majority of the games coming against Indiana
State. Last year the Hoosiers defeated MVC members Evansville and Southwest
Missouri State.
GUYTON GETS TO 1,000: A.J. Guyton became the 34th player in school history to register 1,000 or more points as he scored 34 in last weekend's two games. The junior now has 1,021 career points. He needs 10 points to move into 33rd and 19 to move past Jay Edwards into 32nd place on the all-time scoring list.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 76, South Carolina 55): The Hoosiers got out to a quick early lead and never looked back as they defeated South Carolina by 21 at the NABC Classic. Indiana led 39-27 at the half as the IU defense held the Gamecocks to just 35.5% from the field in the first 20 minutes and then 38.3% for the game. Luke Recker led the IU attack with 22 points while William Gladness added 17 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. A.J. Guyton (11 points) and Kirk Haston (10) were also in double figures. The Hoosiers shot only 41.4% in the first half but then connected on 16-31 in the second half and finished the game at 46.7%. IU also outrebounded USC 38-33.
QUICK START: The Hoosiers are 2-0 for the second time in three years. This is the 18th time in Coach Knight 28 years Indiana has started the season at least 2-0.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: A.J. Guyton was selected as a Playboy Preseason All-America. That was only the third time a Hoosier had received this honor as Isiah Thomas did in 1981 and Calbert Cheaney did in 1993. ESPN's Jay Bilas selected Guyton as one of the top five point guards in the nation. Bilas also ranked the Indiana backcourt as the No. 3 unit in the nation behind Temple and Xavier. Bilas says "The key to Indiana's success this season will be the play of the Hoosier guards, and Bob Knight has a deep crop of talent." Street and Smith's picked Luke Recker as it's No. 1 "Emerging Star" in the nation and Bilas picked William Gladness as one of the "Best of the Rest" power forwards in the country. Street and Smith's also thinks highly of the IU backcourt as it ranked the unit No. 5 in the nation.
FROM THE FIELD: Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1%. They were also 20-4 when they shot better than their opponent last season but did not win a game (0-8) when they were outshot. The Hoosiers are off to a good start from the field as they are shooting 50.8% (60-118) from the field. IU shot 55.2% against Seton Hall and 46.7% vs. USC.
LONG RANGERS: The Hoosiers ranked third in the conference last year in 3-point shooting at 38% as they attempted a school record 489 treys. They made 186 which was the second best mark in school history. IU made 18-32 (56.3%) in the two exhibition games and then made 10-26 in the two games last week.
CHARITY TOSSES: The Hoosiers were also third in the league in free throw shooting at 73.1% last season. Indiana was consistent in the opening weekend as they made 29-38 (76.3%). Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been attempting more free throws than its opponents make. This year IU has attempted 38 and the opponents have made just 15.
BOARD REPORT: People wondered how the Hoosiers would fare on the boards this season and if last weekend is any indication hopefully it won't be a problem. In the two games, the Hoosiers outrebounded its two opponents 37.5-33. William Gladness led the Hoosiers with 21 rebounds including a career-high 14 against Seton Hall.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers were 13-4 last season when they committed the same or less number of turnovers. This season they are 2-0.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers had 37 assists in the two games last weekend. They were consistent as they 18 vs. SHU and 19 against South Carolina.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana recorded 17 steals vs. South Carolina which ties for the fourth-highest mark in school history. The mark was just two off the school record of 19 set against Northwestern in 1987.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but almost accomplished this twice last weekend as they held SHU to 40.3% and South Carolina to 38.3%. That works out to 39.4% for the two games.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 206 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points.
NEXT GAME: The Hoosiers host UAB Wednesday (Nov. 18) . Tipoff
is set for 7 p.m. The game will be televised on the ESPN Regional statewide
network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis plus other over-the-air
