HOOSIERS OPEN SEASON WITH NIT WIN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's women's basketball team used a late second half run to surge by the Cincinnati Bearcats 61-51 in the first round game of the Preseason WNIT Friday evening in front of 1,828 fans in Assembly Hall.
The contest served as the season opener for both teams with the winner advancing to the second round game against Southwester Missouri State Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3:05 (Eastern Time) in Springfield, Mo. SMSU defeated Davidson 120-65 in its Preseason WNIT home opener.
The Hoosiers, who led by just four points 25-21 at the half used a 12-2 run with 6:05 remaining to boost a five point 47-42 lead to a 15 point 57-44 advantage at the 2:23 mark. IU's Cindy Kerns scored seven points during that stretch as the Bearcats were held to just two free throws by Doris Scott.
Indiana was led by freshman Jill Chapman who recorded a double-double in her first official game as a Hoosier. The 6-5 center scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior Kay Morgan scored a team-high 13 points while Cindy Kerns added 12 points and seven rebounds. As a team, the Hoosiers shot 48 percent from the field and won the battle of the boards 42-27.
Tanya Kirk led Cincinnati with 21 points and seven rebounds while Doris Scott netted 13 points with 11 boards.
"Give credit to Cincinnati," coach Jim Izard said. "Cinninati
did a good job of stepping up and really pressuring us defensively. But,
I was very pleased to get this win underneath us. Tonight I was pleased
with our inside play. We did an outstanding job on the boards and getting
the rebound on both sides of the floor."
