HOOSIERS KNOCK OFF NORTHWESTERN --Indiana sets and ties a record in 3-1 win --
The Indiana volleyball team kept its postseason hopes alive with a four-game win over visiting Northwestern. The Hoosiers (15-11, 8-9 Big Ten) used strong blocking and five players with double-figure kills to win 15-13, 15-7, 10-15, 15-11.
Indiana continued to defend their home court as they won their 11th game this season at University Gym. The 11 wins breaks a school record for home victories that was set in 1988. They also tied a team record with 13 solo blocks in the match. The record for solo blocks was set in 1984 in a match with Hawaii.
In the match, Indiana had 21 team blocks to Northwestern's five.
In game one, Indiana spotted Northwestern leads of 6-0 and 7-1 before coming back to win 15-13. The second game was all Indiana as the Hoosiers won easily 15-7. After the intermission, the Wildcats won game three 15-10. In game four, the Hoosiers built a 13-4 lead and withstood a Northwestern comeback to win 15-11. The Wildcats hit only .059 in the final game.
Junior Ryann Connors and senior Melissa Rooney led five players in double-figure kills. Connors, an outside hitter, had 22 kills and 16 digs while Rooney tallied 16 kills and nine digs. Others in double figures were Jen Magelssen and Cydryce Carter with 13 and Amanda Welter with 11 kills.
Head coach Katie Weismiller commented on the importance of this match, "If we're looking at the postseason, then we knew we had to win this won at home. We played disciplined tonight and stuck to our game plan. This was one of the best blocking games I have seen here."
The Hoosiers will be at home for their final home match of the regular season when they host Minnesota on Friday. It will be Fan Appreciation Night and Senior Night as seniors Jen Magelssen, Katie Parmenter, and Melissa Rooney will be honored. Match time Friday night is 7 p.m. at the University Gym.
