HOOSIERS PLAY KANSAS STATE AT MAUI INVITE
GAME #5 FACTS: Kansas State (3-0) vs. Indiana (4-0). Monday (Nov. 23). Lahaina Civic Center (2,500), Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i. Game time is 9 p.m. ET/4 p.m. HT. First round game of the 15th annual Maui Invitational.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play Kansas State in the first round of the Maui Invitational. Indiana comes into the game 4-0 after defeating UAB 91-54 last Wednesday in Bloomington.
TELEVISION: The Kansas State game will be broadcast by ESPN. Bob Carpenter and Bill Raftery call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 724 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 622-220 (.739). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 724-270 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 6-0 vs. Kansas State both overall and at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Kansas State are meeting for the 31st time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 18-12 but this is the first meeting since the 1985-86 season. Indiana has won the last eight and nine of the last 10 meetings. This is the first time in the series the teams will be playing on a neutral court.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: Before leaving for Hawai'i, the Hoosiers were ranked 17th by ESPN/USA Today and No. 21 by the Associated Press.
RANDLE EL JOINS THE TEAM: Antwaan Randle El, Indiana's starting quarterback, will be making the journey to Maui to join the basketball team. Randle El will play against Purdue Saturday and travel on Sunday. Last season he practiced with the basketball team following the football season. One of the most exciting newcomers to college football this season, Randle El will wear #10 for the Hoosiers and will be in uniform for the K-State game.
IU'S MAUI INVITATIONAL NOTEBOOK: This is Indiana's third appearance in the Maui Invitational. The Hoosiers also played in 1990 and 1994. Indiana played in Honolulu last year at the United Airlines Tipoff Classic. Indiana is 3-3 in its two previous trips to Maui. In 1990, the Hoosiers defeated Northeastern and Santa Clara to advance to the title game where they lost to Syracuse, a team in this year's field, 77-74. In 1994, Indiana lost its opening game to Utah and then rebounded to defeat host Chaminade before losing to Tulane. This is Indiana's sixth trip to the islands (and third in five years). In the five previous trips the Hoosiers have played 14 games and have gone 8-6. Besides the previous two Maui Invitational trips, IU was 3-0 at the 1974 Rainbow Classic, 1-2 at the 1980 Rainbow Classic and 1-1 at last year's Tipoff Classic. This year's tournament will be played on the same days, Nov. 23, 24 and 25, as the 1990 tournament in which the Hoosiers made the finals. The games at the tournament the previous two trips were Indiana's first of the season. This year IU has played four regular season games before Maui. Brian Evans tied a school record at the 1994 tournament as he made 8 3-pointers against Chaminade. He scored a career-high 37 points in the game.
HOOSIERS VS. THE BIG 12: Indiana is 56-29 all-time vs. teams in the Big 12. The 30 games played between IU and K-State are the most for the Hoosiers against a Big 12 team. The last time Indiana played a Big 12 team was against Colorado in the 1996 NCAA Tournament (L 80-62).
LAST GAME: (Indiana 91, UAB 54): A.J. Guyton scored 21 points and Luke Recker added 20 as No.21 Indiana, substituting freely almost the entire game, beat Alabama-Birmingham 91-54. The Hoosiers used two big runs in the first half to take control. Guyton had 11 points during a 17-4 streak midway through the opening period as Indiana went ahead 24-11. The Blazers closed within nine points on two free throws and a basket by Fred Williams, but a 3-point play by Kirk Haston started another 15-4 Indiana run that put the game out of reach. The Blazers never scored more than two baskets in a row the whole game and managed only three field goals and three free throws in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Even after the starters retired to the bench for good with 8 minutes to go, the Hoosiers continued widening the lead. Every Indiana player scored, including 10 by Haston and six apiece by Odle, Fife and Rob Turner.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Indiana's 37-point victory over UAB was it's largest in almost three years. The Hoosiers last won by that many points on Dec. 29, 1995 when they defeated Appalachian State 103-59 (44 points).
QUICK START: The Hoosiers are 4-0 for the second time in three years. This is the 10th time in Coach Knight 28 years Indiana has started the season at least 4-0. Starting the season 4-0 under Coach Knight is usually a good sign of a successful year. The Hoosiers have won six Big Ten titles in the previous nine years in which they started 4-0. They also won 20 or more games seven times and 30 or more three times.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: A.J. Guyton was selected as a Playboy Preseason All-America. That was only the third time a Hoosier had received this honor as Isiah Thomas did in 1981 and Calbert Cheaney did in 1993. ESPN's Jay Bilas selected Guyton as one of the top five point guards in the nation. Bilas also ranked the Indiana backcourt as the No. 3 unit in the nation behind Temple and Xavier. Bilas says "The key to Indiana's success this season will be the play of the Hoosier guards, and Bob Knight has a deep crop of talent." Street and Smith's picked Luke Recker as it's No. 1 "Emerging Star" in the nation and Bilas picked William Gladness as one of the "Best of the Rest" power forwards in the country. Street and Smith's also thinks highly of the IU backcourt as it ranked the unit No. 5 in the nation.
FROM THE FIELD: Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1%. They were also 20-4 when they shot better than their opponent last season but did not win a game (0-8) when they were outshot. This season IU has shot better than its opponents in each game. The Hoosiers shot 50% (30-60) vs. UAB which was their second 50% or better game of the season. The Hoosiers enter the Maui Invitational shooting 49.6% for the season. In each game this season they have had one half where they have shot above 50% with the other one being below the break even mark.
LONG RANGERS: The Hoosiers ranked third in the conference last year in 3-point shooting at 38% as they attempted a school record 489 treys. They made 186 which was the second best mark in school history. Indiana had their best shooting game from long range vs. UAB as they made 7-15 (46.7%). That effort improved the season mark to 40.7%. IU has made 7 3 pointers in each of the last three games.
CHARITY TOSSES: The Hoosiers were also third in the league in free throw shooting at 73.1% last season. The Hoosiers had season highs of 24-31 and 77.4% vs. UAB. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 64 and the opponents have attempted just 56. The Hoosiers averaged 21.9 free throws per game last year and are slightly ahead of this pace this season as they enter the Maui Invitational averaging 22.3 attempts per game.
BOARD REPORT: People wondered how the Hoosiers would fare on the boards this season and if the first four games is any indication hopefully it won't be a problem. The Hoosiers have won the battle of the boards three times in the first four games while in the other game, the rebounding was tied. IU had its best game on the boards with 44 against UAB. That mark also included a season best 37 defensive boards. This season IU is averaging 39.8 rebounds per game which is 6.1 more per contest than last year's total of 33.8 a game.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers were 13-4 last season when they committed the same or less number of turnovers. This season they are 4 0. While every team would like to turn the ball over less, the Hoosiers have at least been somewhat consistent this season averaging 16 per game. Last year the team averaged 15.3 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers are averaging 19.5 assists per game in the early going. Last season the Hoosiers averaged 17.8 per game. The Hoosiers had a season-high 22 assists against UAB. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but has raised that to 65.5% this year.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good in the early going and one of those indicators is the team's total of 43 steals in the first four games (10.8 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana had 17 steals vs. South Carolina which ties for the fourth-highest mark in school history and has had at least 9 in three different games including two games in double figures.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already done this three times this season. IU also had one of its better defensive halves in recent memory as they held Indiana State to just 5 field goals and 19.2% from the field in the second half of that game. The Hoosiers held UAB to an opponent's season-low 27.5% (19 69). The last time IU held an opponent under 30% was in December of 1996 when Valparaiso shot just 29.8% (17-57). That covers a span of 54 games. Over the last three halves IU's opponents have shot just 25.2% (24-95).

SCORING SOME POINTS: Indiana is averaging 81.5 points per game and has scored over 80 twice this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 ore more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 301-18 when scoring 80 or more, 140-4 when scoring 90 or more (as they did with a season-high 91 vs. UAB) and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has registered a season-high 5 blocks in each of the last two games. Luke Recker and Kirk Haston lead the team with 4 each. The Hoosiers are averaging 4.2 blocks per game after averaging 3.3 a year ago.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 206 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 19.5 points per game.
NEXT GAME: Depending on the outcome of the K-State game, the Hoosiers play either Utah or Arizona State Tuesday in the Maui Invitational. The Hoosiers would play at 9 p.m. ET/4 p.m. HT if they won and 4 p.m. ET/11 a.m. HT if they lost. If the Hoosiers do win, the game would be on ESPN. If they lose, there is no television coverage of the game. All Maui games can be heard on the IU Radio Network.

#53 TOM GEYER: A walk-on to the program who is now eligible to play after redshirting last season. . .scored the first points of his career vs. UAB as he tallied 4 on a FG and was 2-2 from the line. . .also had an assist and 2 rebounds in the game in 4 minutes.
#30 WILLIAM GLADNESS: Indiana's top frontcourt returnee. . .quick and active in the low post. . .scored just 4 points and did not have any rebounds vs. UAB in 13 minutes. . .recorded his first double-double of the year (and third of his career) with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Seton Hall. . .had a career-high 5 assists in that game as well. . .added a season high 17 points and team-high 7 rebounds vs. South Carolina. . .9 points but did have 7 rebounds vs. ISU. . .second on the team with 7 steals and is shooting 50%.
#25 A.J. GUYTON: Team-high 21 points and a season-high 6 rebounds vs. UAB. . .made 8-11 FGs and 4-4 3FGs in the game. . .season-low 7 points vs. ISU but did add 4 assists and 3 rebounds. . .last year he averaged 20.3 points per game in the four games following single figure games and had 21 vs. UAB. . .season-high 23 points (9-12 FGs, 3-4 3FGs) vs. Seton Hall to go along with 5 assists, a block and a steal. . .11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists vs. USC. . .Preseason All-American. . .good perimeter player who is as good driving to the basket as well as outside shooting. . .leads team in assists with 15. . .became the 34th player in school history to register 1,000 or more points earlier this season. . .now has 1,049 career points which is 31st on the all-time IU list.
#35 KIRK HASTON: Redshirted last season and has been a solid player off the bench along the frontline. . .has scored in double figures each game. . .10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists vs. UAB. . .career-highs of 18 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks vs. ISU. . .17 points, 8 rebounds in 27 minutes vs. Seton Hall. . .came back the next night to have 10 points and 5 rebounds vs. USC. . .a good passer, he has 10 assists this season. . .made 22 of 37 FGs and 11-14 FTs. . .leads team in rebounding (8.3) and FG% (.595) and is the the squad's third-leading scorer. . .possesses good hands and makes good decisions. . .Knight called him one of the most improved players last season as he spent the year practicing.
#32 KYLE HORNSBY: Underwent surgery on his right knee in September and has yet to practice or play. . .his return to the lineup at this time is undetermined.
#12 LUKE JIMENEZ: Good outside shooter. . .excellent ball handler who has a knack for not turning the ball over (34 TO's in 709 career minutes). . .5 points, career-high 5 rebounds and a season best 3 assists vs. UAB. . .season-high 6 points, 2 rebounds vs. ISU. . .played a key role in IU's comeback in that game with his ballhandling and defense. . .averaged 5.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2 assists per game in the last two contests. . .had 2 steals and an assist vs. SHU.
#24 MICHAEL LEWIS: Started his first game of the season vs. UAB and had 2 points, 4 assists and a rebound. . .5 points, team-high 5 assists vs. ISU. . .on the floor as the Hoosiers made their comeback. . .had 4 points vs. SHU. . .registered 6 points (2-2 3FGs) vs. USC to go along with a team-high 5 assists and 3 rebounds. . .led the Hoosiers in assists last season with 150 which included a school record-tying 15 at Iowa. . .this season is second on the team with 14 assists.
#43 JARRAD ODLE: Career highs of 6 points (2-4 FGs, 2-2 FTs), 4 rebounds vs. UAB. . .also played in the USC game had had a rebound and a steal.
#10 ANTWAAN RANDLE EL: Indiana's starting quarterback who will join the basketball team this week in Hawai'i. . .should be a valuable addition to the team as the season progresses. . .as he has shown in football, he is quick, aggressive and a good leader. . .plays with a great deal of confidence in both sports.
#4 LUKE RECKER: Indiana's leading scorer (18.8). . .third consecutive 20+ point game with 20, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists vs. UAB. . .season highs of 23 points, 7 rebounds vs. ISU. . .scored 15 points in the second half of that game as the Hoosiers came back to win. . .had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists vs. SHU. . .team-high 22 points, team-high tying 5 assists and another team-high 4 steals vs. USC. . .last three games has made 22-41 FGs (53.6%), 8-16 3FGs while averaging 21.7 ppg. . .leads team in FT-FTA with 17-21. . .hard-nosed player who is a crowd favorite among the Indiana faithful.

#44 LYNN WASHINGTON: Has come into the program and won a starting job on the frontline. . .strong, physical player who is aggressive going to the basket. . .played well in all four games. . .3 points, season-high tying 6 rebounds vs. UAB. . .season-high 8 points vs. ISU in 14 minutes. . .4 points, 4 rebounds in just 15 minutes vs. SHU. . .had 7 points and 6 rebounds (4 on the offensive end) vs. USC in 18 minutes.
