Hoosiers to take on Northern Iowa in opening round
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University's volleyball team has received a bid to compete in the 1998 NCAA Postseason Tournament. The Hoosiers will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for a first round match against The University of Northern Iowa Thursday, Dec. 3. The third-seeded and 13th ranked Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (27-5) will host the first and second rounds in Barnhill Arena and will face New Hampshire (24-10) on Thursday also. Match times are still to be determined.
Indiana finished the regular season 16-13 overall, 9-11 in the Big Ten Conference and tied for fifth-place with Ohio State in the final league standings.
Northern Iowa, which is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, won the Missouri Valley Conference and Tournament title with a 25-2 overall record and a 18-0 mark in the MVC. In addition, Northern Iowa's setter, Shannon Perry, was named the Missouri Valley Conference's Player of the Year.
"We are certainty excited about getting into the tournament," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "It was one of our goals that we set for ourselves early in the season. We felt that we have played well and deserve a shot in the tourney. We were one of the bubble teams to be selected so now we need to go out and prove that we were deserving of a selection spot.
We know that Northern Iowa is one of the top teams in the Midwest and will be a tough opponent. But we are looking forward to playing a team outside of our conference.
For the Hoosiers, it is the second time in school history that IU has
landed a postseason NCAA berth. Indiana made its first trip to the NCAAs
in 1995 when the Hoosiers played George Mason in the opening round, losing
8-15, 10-15, 13-15 in Fairfax, Va. IU finished that season 20-14 overall,
12-8 in the Big Ten for its most successful season in the program's history.
