HOOSIERS PLAY AT NOTRE DAME
GAME #8 FACTS: Indiana (6-1) at Notre Dame (2-4). Tuesday (Dec. 1). Joyce ACC (11,418), Notre Dame, Ind. Game time is 8 p.m. ET.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their first "true" road game of the season tonight at Notre Dame. IU has played only two games at home but the other five have been on a neutral court. Indiana comes into the game with a 6-1 record after going 2-1 last week at the Maui Invitational.
TELEVISION: The Notre Dame game will be broadcast by the ESPN Regional Network. John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 726 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 624-221 (.738). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 726-271 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 19-7 vs. Notre Dame overall and 19-6 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Notre Dame are meeting for the 62nd time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 42-19. IU has won the last three meetings and eight of the last nine. The last three games at Notre Dame have been close with the Hoosiers winning 75-70 in 1992, losing 80-79 in overtime in 1994 and winning 76-75 in 1996. The Hoosiers lead the series 11-8 in games played at Notre Dame.
HOOSIERS VS. THE BIG EAST: Indiana is 59-35 all-time vs. teams in the Big East. The 61 games played between IU and Notre Dame are the most for the Hoosiers against a Big East team. Indiana has already played two teams from this conference this year as they defeated Seton hall (83-69) and lost to Syracuse (76-63).
LAST MEETING: (Indiana 91, Notre Dame 80, Dec. 3, 1997, Bloomington): A.J. Guyton came off the bench to score 20 points while Andrae Patterson added 16 to lead the Hoosiers to the 11-point victory. The Irish jumped out to an 11-2 lead but the Hoosiers scored the next 11 points to take a 13-11 lead. The first half was closely played as there were seven ties and four lead changes before IU went to the break leading 44-39. Indiana pulled away in the second half and took a 63-52 lead before the Irish cut that to 3 at 69-66 and 71-68. IU then increased that lead to 11 again and never led by less than 6 the rest of the game.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 16th by ESPN/USA Today and the Associated Press.
RANDLE EL JOINS THE TEAM BUT IS OUT FOUR WEEKS: Antwaan Randle El, Indiana's starting quarterback, joined the team last week at the Maui Invitational. He dressed for each game but did not play. However, Randle El will be on the sidelines for four weeks with a broken bone in his hand suffered in the Hoosiers first practice after returning from the islands.
LAST GAME: (Syracuse 76, Indiana 63): Preston Shumpert keyed two runs, leading Syracuse to a 76-63 victory in the championship of the Maui Invitational. Shumpert had 19 points, nine on 3 pointers, and seven rebounds for the Orangemen, and Jason Hart added 17 points and five assists. Indiana (6-1) was hurt by the failure of A.J. Guyton to score a single point for the first time in his college career. The junior guard came in with a 16.5 average this season, but missed all six shots, including four from the 3-point line. Syracuse made 29 of 42 shots (56 percent), while Indiana made just 24 of 61 (39 percent). William Gladness kept the Hoosiers in contention most of the night, with 24 points and 10 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds. Luke Recker added 15 points. Indiana was also helped by 17 Syracuse turnovers that resulted in 19 points. Gladness' offensive board work also contributed to 16 second chance points.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Indiana's 37-point victory over UAB was it's largest in almost three years. The Hoosiers last won by that many points on Dec. 29, 1995 when they defeated Appalachian State 103-59 (44 points).
GOOD START COMES TO AN END: The Hoosiers season-opening winning streak came to an halt at 6 after the loss to Syracuse. This was the sixth time in Coach Knight's 28 years Indiana started the season at least 6-0. In three of those five seasons, the Hoosiers went on to win the Big Ten title (1975, 1976, 1983). They also went on to register 20 or more wins four times and 30 or more twice (31 in 1975, 32 in 1976, 24 in 1983 and 22 in 1997)
CAREER GAME FOR GLADNESS: William Gladness had one of the best games of his Indiana career vs. Syracuse. He registered career-highs of 24 points and 7 steals while also grabbing 10 rebounds. The 7 steals ties him for the third-highest single game total in school history with Jim Crews who accomplished the feat against UCLA in 1976. The senior was also named to the Maui Invitational All-Tournament team.
GUYTON USUALLY GOOD AFTER A BAD GAME: A.J. Guyton was held scoreless for the first time in his college career against Syracuse (72 games). But that might not be all that bad for the Hoosiers. Not counting the Syracuse game, he had been held to single figures 16 previous times in his career and has come back in the next game to average 17.2 a contest. The last six times this has happened (since the start of last season) the junior has come back to average 21.2 per game which includes five games of 20 or more points.
FROM THE FIELD: Indiana struggled from the field in Maui as they made just 65-169 (38.5%). That included a season-low 35.3% (18-51) game against Utah. The Hoosiers have shot below 40% in each of the last two games which is the first time that has happened this season. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting just 45%. IU has still outshot their opponents 6 times and has won each of those games.
LONG RANGERS: The 3-point shooting also suffered in Maui as the Hoosiers made just 16-48 (33.3%) which included a season-low 6-22 (27.3%) game against Syracuse. However that was the only game this year in which IU has been below 36% from long range. Overall, the Hoosiers have still shot at least 43% from long range in two of the last four games.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana had a bad start in Maui from the line with a 18 28 (64.3%) game vs. Kansas State. But the team followed that up by going 22-28 (78.6%) in the last two games which included a season best 81.3% (13-16) game vs. Utah. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 104 and the opponents have attempted 100.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers won the battle of the boards three times in the first four games while in the other game, the rebounding was tied. However the Hoosiers were outrebounded in each game of the Maui Invite by an average of 7.6 per game. IU's board total has slid in each of the last four games from a season best 44 against UAB to 38 vs. K-State to 36 vs. Utah to a season-low 29 vs. Syracuse. Indiana comes into tonight's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -1.6.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers are averaging 17 assists per game. Last season they averaged 17.8 per game. The Hoosiers had a season-high 22 assists against UAB but could not get over 20 in any of the three Maui games. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season and are at that same total this year.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers were 13-4 last season when they committed the same or less number of turnovers. This season they are 6 1. While assists were harder to come by in Hawai'i, the Hoosiers cut down their miscues as they averaged just 13.3 per game in Maui. They also had a season low 12 in each of the last two games. This year the team is averaging 15 miscues per game. Last year that was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good in the early going and one of those indicators is the team's total of 71 steals in the first seven games (10.1 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has has four games in which it has registered double figures in steals. The 14 against Syracuse was the second best total of the season and ties for the 10th best single game mark in school history (attained five previous times).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already done this five times this season. The Hoosiers had held five consecutive opponents under 40% until Syracuse shot an opponents season-high 55.8%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch already this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in five halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting just 38.9% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION OFF: Indiana's poor shooting in Maui had led to a decline in point production. IU went to Maui averaging a season best 81.5 points per game but after averaging just 62 points per game in the last three games, the season total has dropped to a low of 73.1 per contest. Indiana has still managed to score over 80 twice this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 301-18 when scoring 80 or more, 140-4 when scoring 90 or more (as they did with a season-high 91 vs. UAB) and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has registered a season-high 5 blocks in three consecutive games before having just 5 combined in the last two games. Kirk Haston leads the team with 8. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.8 blocks per game after averaging 3.3 a year ago.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 206 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 13.7 points per game.
