INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Even though it was the opening game of the season, No. 22 Indiana came out in mid-season form Saturday, building a big lead early and then holding off Seton Hall 83-69 Saturday in the NABC Classic.
A.J. Guyton led the Hoosiers with 23 points, while redshirt freshman Kirk Haston came off the bench to score 17 in 27 minutes. William
Gladness, who sparked Indiana early, had 16 points. Gladness was 6-for-6 from the field and had nine rebounds, four assists and two steals as Indiana opened a 41-24 halftime lead. He finished with a career-high 14 rebounds, while he and Guyton led the Hoosiers with five assists apiece.
Indiana took its biggest lead, 51-26, in the opening five minutes of the second half.
The Pirates rallied behind Gary Saunders, who had 22 of his 29 points in the second half, and Duane Jordan who had 13 of his 19 in the second half. A basket by Saunders brought Seton Hall within 73-64 with three minutes left, but Indiana held off the rally by making all 10 of its free throws the rest of the game.
Guyton also made a major contribution defensively, ending a 15-game streak of consecutive games in double figures by Seton Hall's Shaheen Holloway, who was limited to six points on 3-of-15 shooting.
The Hoosiers hit 10 of their first 15 shots to take a 26-8 lead. The Pirates connected on just two of their first 10 shots.
Indiana shot 61 percent (19-of-31) in the first half, while Seton Hall committed 12 turnovers against an aggressive man-to-man defense.
Indiana shot 55 percent for the game, while Seton Hall finished at 40 percent. The Pirates resorted to 3-pointers after falling behind and were just3-of-18 from beyond the arc.
