HOOSIERS WIN IN HATTER CLASSIC
DELAND, Fla. - Indiana's women basketball team defeated Wright State 80-48 Friday evening in the second game of the Hatter Classic to advance to the championship game Saturday evening at 8 p.m. The Hoosiers, 7-3, will face Alcorn State, 6-2, who defeated host Stetson 69-55 in the first game of the Classic.
After a sluggish start, the Hoosiers came out of the lockerroom on fire to start the second half with a 12-5 run and taking a 43-36 advantage. Indiana continued to bomb away from the field while also holding the Raiders scoreless for 9:26 with an 18-0 run . Indiana, which shot 68 percent from the field in the second half, also held Wright State to just two field goals and six points in the final 12:49.
In the first half, the Hoosiers trailed by as many as seven points 22-15 and only managed a two point lead twice as the Raiders shot 57 percent from the field. The Hoosiers went up 31-29 with 1:30 left in the first half before WSU's Lenora Combs' jumper netted her 15th point of the half and sent the two teams into the lockerroom tied at 31-all.
Four players scored in double digits for the Hooisers led by Jill Chapman's 16 points which included her first collegiate 3-pointer. Cindy Kerns and Summar Maines added 12 points while Kristi Green tossed in 11. Maines led IU on the boards with eight, while Kay Morgan dished out a career-high nine assists.
As a team, IU shot a season-best 57 percent from the field and outrebounded
the Raiders 31-25.
"I think the difference in the game was the level of intensity tonight,"
said Coach Jim Izard. "In the first half we were flat. So in the lockerroom
at the half, we talked about what we needed to do to win this game and we
did those things in the second half. Overall, this was a fun game to coach
and watch in the second half. To see the players play so hard and with a
high level of intensity. I think that when we inserted LaKale Malone into
the lineup, that is what really started things going for us, she got the
team rolling with her aggessive hard play."
